Something's in the air! Homebirths are gradually becoming more popular and even the government has recognised that, given good information and support, many more women would choose this birth option. So, come on help babyworld put homebirth firmly on the map by sending in your stories and show the world that it's not the preserve of airheads who want to dance in the meadows with daisies in their hair. You can win some fabulous prizes too!

News from the babyworld shop team

It’s a crunch month for car seat safety as September 18th sees new regulations ensuring we restrain our children in appropriate child car seats become law. To cut through the confusion, very simply all children must use a car seat when travelling by car.until their 12th birthday or until they’re 1.35 metres tall (whichever they reach first). Anyone with children, or who transports children (Grandparents, Childminders etc) is going to be affected, so it’s wise to be prepared. To help you, consult one of our many car seat articles and take a look at the shop’s car seat pages to browse for your next seat purchase, there’s something for every child and every budget.

There are also lots of slightly more exciting products in the shop which you can browse at the same time! Have a look at our new Aquatopia range for bathroom fun, our Crocs range for comfy feet, large and small and the Trunki ride on suitcase for travelling tots.

Which pregnancy book?

If you're pregnant or planning to be, a book can provide you with a wealth of information relating to everything from pre-conception and pregnancy to labour, birth and beyond.

To help you through the maze of pregnancy books (and help you decide on the best read for you), our panel of three expectant mums have been busy reviewing some of the latest books to hit the shelves. Click here>>

A bump-er get together!

Many mums find the babyworld antenatal clubs a fantastic way to cyber-meet and cyber-bond with other pregnant women. Most times, getting together over the internet on a daily or weekly basis is enough but, for some keen groups, that just won't do!

Our November 2005 group decided to take things one step further and meet in person. Here Hayley Partridge, moderator of the group, talks about their giant get-together in London, and of a more intimate meet-up in Sweden. Click here>>

Music festivals and babies do mix!

Are music festivals best left for those pre-baby days? Tammy Lovell proves that the opposite is in fact the case when she took her 8-month-old daughter to a 3 day music festival in Herefordshire.

Forum of the month

Our General Pregnancy forum forms the backbone of our community and is often the first stop for mums-to-be coming to babyworld looking for support, reassurance and guidance after they've heard the good news! Lynne Morgan, our very popular pregnancy forum moderator, is constantly there for them.

About Lynn:
Lynne had her intended musical career diverted due to illness and after a stint in industry was made redundant which allowed her to follow her passion for complementary therapies. She has studied with the NCT, she is a reflexologist, reiki master and a baby massage teacher and is also mum to two boys.

Lynne feels that far too many obstacles are put in the way of healthy women with healthy pregnancies being allowed to choose to have their babies in places other than large hospital units. She says " I also feel that intervention is becoming the rule, rather than the exception, and that interference in the birth process, whilst sometimes essential, is often done because of protocol, rather than need. I'm passionate about complementary therapies, which have a very valid place alongside (and sometimes in place of) modern, allopathic medicine, and in my belief in the ability of the female body to give birth."

The sky's the limit

Recently, Gemma McLeese nephew, who's six, was diagnosed with leukaemia. It was a terrible shock to everyone in the family but they were supported by a charity who have proved to be a fantastic support throughout all of this. They helped in so many ways that she wanted to show them how grateful we all are for their hard work, and how much it is appreciated.

The obvious thing to do was to try to raise some money for the charity. However, she says "why on earth I chose to do a skydive as a fundraising activity is beyond me. It was my own idea, and a mad one at that! I hate heights with a passion and the thought of being that high and jumping out of an airplane made me feel ill. But I kept thinking about why I was doing it and that kept me going." Read about babyworlder ,Gemma's amazing jump for charity.

This month's big test

Parents across the country face the difficult task of coaxing children as old as 12 back into child booster seats with the new child car seat regulations coming into force this month (check out our Car seat safety guide for a complete lowdown)

A great way to ensure optimum safety throughout your child's growing years is to invest in a Multi Group Car seat. Child restraints that span different groups offer many benefits for you and your child, including:

  • Continuous comfort for your child
  • Protection for your child as they grow
  • Easily adjustable harness
  • Less expensive than individual group models
  •

Some seats cater for groups 1, 2 and 3 which mean you can secure your child from around 1 - 10 years old, whereas others are available for groups 2 and 3 only. To help you decide on the best model for your child, our parent panel have been putting some of the latest models through their paces
