Women fed up of being supermums

A new survey has found that many women no longer want to be a supermum, juggling work and family, after witnessing the physical and emotional toll it took on their mothers

The survey by New Woman magazine found that seven out of ten young women did not want to work as hard as their mothers' generation, and felt children were better off 'at home with their mum or dad'.

Only one per cent said their career would remain their top priority once they had children while one in four said they would stop working altogether when they had children. Many more plan to go part-time.

It also appears that women's lib may not be as prominent amongst young women with two thirds believing the man should be the main provider for the family.

A further eighty per cent felt that women were expected to fill too many roles in society.

Seventy five per cent admitted to worrying about their size and shape on a daily basis and at least two thirds feel that their lives would be better if they felt happier with their body.

The star most young women wanted to look like was Catherine Zeta Jones, followed by Angelina Jolie and Jennifer Lopez.

Margi Conklin, editor of New Woman magazine, said, "Young women are increasingly putting their personal happiness before a big salary or high-powered career.

"They don't want to work crazy hours while their kids are put into nursery and their relationships collapse under the strain. "

They crave a life-work balance where they can enjoy a fulfilling relationship, raise happy children and have a job that interests them but doesn't overwhelm them."
