Charity calls for all child carers
Children's communication charity ICAN is calling for all child carers
to register for the 2007 Chatterbox Challenge to raise money to support
their work with children who struggle with speech and language.
Hundreds of nurseries, pre-schools, playgroups and schools
have already registered for this year's annual sing-along.
The Chatterbox Challenge has been designed by I CAN’s speech
and language experts to help children develop their speech and language
skills and this year, with the help of principal sponsor Openreach and
sponsors LeapFrog Toys (UK) and Early Learning Centre, forms part of I
CAN’s Make Chatter Matter awareness-raising campaign to highlight the
importance of children’s communication development during the early years
as the foundation for learning and development.
I CAN Chief Executive Virginia Beardshaw said, “The Chatterbox
Challenge is lots of fun and very easy to do – children can participate
at home, in the nursery or with their childminder and of course with mums,
dads and grandparents.
"It’s a roaring fun and noisy activity for children
in playgroups and everyone who registers gets an activity pack so they
have everything they need.
“The use of actions during songs helps children to develop
important communication skills such as turn-taking and sharing information
with others.
"Children who are finding talking more difficult will
also benefit from being given a visual reminder through signs in conjunction
with the spoken word. Songs and rhymes enable children to learn about
sound patterns in words through rhyme and repetition.”
It’s not too late to register your centre, class or group
for the Chatterbox Challenge and everyone who registers will receive I
CAN’s free activity pack brimming with discount gift vouchers, ideas and
activities designed with communication development in mind. Included in
the pack are some suggested songs and jungle jingles, colour-in certificates,
stickers and sponsor forms.
Visit Chatterbox
Challenge where you can register for your free activity pack, and
download our fun activity sheets. Activities include a best monkey competition,
an indoor safari hunt and craft ideas, as well as educational activities
using children’s books, poetry and songs.
