Big baby causing quite a stir
A newborn baby is causing a sensation in the Mexican city of Cancun.
Locals are flocking to the maternity hospital to catch a
glimpse of newborn Antonio Cruz who weighed in at a whopping 14 and a
half pounds.
The extra large bundle of joy was born on Monday by caesarean
section and apart from a few minor complications is said to be doing well.
Nicknamed 'Super Tonio', the baby is twice the size of an
average newborn and is already in nappies for six month old babies.
He drinks 5 ounces of milk every three hours, and measures
22 inches in length.
Speaking from the hospital on Wednesday, director Narciso
Perez Bravo said, "We haven’t found any abnormality in the child.
There are some signs of high blood sugar, and a slight blood infection,
but that is being controlled so that the child can get on with his normal
life in a few more days."
The new mother, Teresa Alejandra Cruz, 23, and father, Luis
Vasconcelos, 38, said they were proud of the boy, but added that he's
not the first big baby in the family.
Cruz gave birth to a baby girl seven years ago who weighed
11.46 pounds.
According to the Guinness Book of Records, the heaviest
baby born to a healthy mother was a boy weighing 22 pounds and 8 ounces,
born in Aversa, Italy, in September 1955.
