Jack tops baby names for 12th year

Jack and Jessica are the most popular boy and girl names for babies born in 2006.

Jack has topped the table for favourite boys' names for twelve years running but Jessica has helped knock back last year's leader, Ellie, to tenth position.

The other most popular boys' names which make up the top five are traditional choices of Joshua, Thomas, James and Daniel

Chloe, Emily, Sophie and Olivia make up the rest of the top five for girls.

The yearly list, which is compiled by Bounty, also found that of 380,000 babies born in Britain this year, the highest climber for boys is Preston, while Ruby is the fast riser for girls.

Bounty managing director Simon Williamson said, "Parents are becoming more adventurous with girls' names and take their inspiration-from all kind of sources, including celebrities like Geri Halliwell, who has certainly helped to make floral names a growing trend."

Names such as Poppy, Daisy, Lily and Jasmine are all amongst the top 50 names for girls.
