April baby boom for the North
A baby boom has been predicted for Northern towns during the month of
April.
The study, undertaken by Yell.com data analysts, examined baby related
searches in the past year to pinpoint exactly when and where a baby boom
was expected to hit.
Working on the assumption that parents start looking for baby goods and
services after their initial 12 week scan, and that final preparations
are made as Mums enter their final trimester, Yell.com saw dramatic peaks
in searches in September and October 2006 and subsequently in January
and February this year.
The cities that showed the largest increase included Aberdeen and Glasgow,
Cardiff and the big Northern cities such as Manchester, York, Liverpool
and Sheffield..
Helen Stevenson, Yell’s chief marketing officer in the UK, said: "We
see more than 24 million searches on Yell.com each month ranging from
local nurseries and online baby superstores, through to everyday plumbers
and decorators. We are uniquely placed to understand the behaviours and
trends of the UK population allowing us to show which cities are likely
to experience a big change in 2007, such as a pending baby boom in Aberdeen."
The research also revealed an insight into the UK's great North/South
debate. While many northern cities sit at the top of the chart, London
didn't even make the top twenty – the UK capital was placed at twenty-one.
In fact, nowhere south of Bristol made it into the top ten.
