Britney is expecting her first baby

After weeks of speculation, Britney Spears has finally confirmed that she is pregnant with her first child.

The US popstar and her dancer husband, Kevin Federline, made the announcement on Britney's official website.

"The time has finally come to share our wonderful news that we are expecting our first child together," she wrote, but she played down news that she spent the weekend in hospital.

"There are reports that I was in the hospital this weekend, Kevin and I just want everyone to know that all is well.

"Thank you for your thoughts and prayers."

Spears, 23, married dancer Federline, 27, in September 2004 after they had been together for just six months and whilst this will be Britney's first baby, her husband has two other children by his ex-girlfriend, actress Shar Jackson, one of which was born after he and Spears started going out together.

The announcement comes weeks after Spears lashed out at US tabloid magazines which she called "false" and "desperate" for speculating that she was pregnant and her marriage already in trouble.

The couple have not revealed any further details about the pregnancy but US reports believe her to be between three and four months.

The popstar had decided to stay out of the limelight after her wedding but has already embarked on a reality TV show depicting life in the Spears/Federline household.

It is not yet known whether her pregnancy will affect the planned show, which is expected to feature home footage of the couple, including their wedding day.

In the meantime, speculation has already started about what name will be fitting for this particular celebrity baby.
