Choosing childcare
Finding good childcare needn't be a nightmare. It
just takes a bit of forward-thinking and thorough research. Our
guidelines will help you find what's best for you and your
baby...
You will need to sort out childcare arrangements while you are still pregnant. You can
find excellent, average and mediocre childcare in every area, and it is important that you
give yourself plenty of time to research what is available locally. Good quality childcare
is in great demand, so to ensure that your child has the best, rather than all that is
left, plan ahead.
Costs vary greatly from area to area and according to the type of childcare you choose.
Ask around among friends, contact your local social services, or ring local nanny agencies
to find the going rates in your area.
Remember, whatever your childcare choice, you should:
- Leave plenty of time to make your choice
- Ask friends for their recommendations
- If you feel at all hesitant about someone, follow your instincts, don't compromise
- Make sure all references are followed up
- Always have a written contract
- Make contingency plans in case of an emergency
- Build up your baby's time with a carer gradually
Each type of childcare has advantages and disadvantages that need to be considered.
