Hiking
with a baby on board
Did the holiday affect Madison's sleep pattern?
She napped in the backpack a few times. We pushed her nap schedule back
to late afternoon and we put her down as soon as we reached our B&B. This
worked out really well. If she didn't sleep all that long during nap time,
we would put her down earlier to bed that night.
Where did you change nappies?
We changed Madison's nappies along the side of the road. We put one
of our coats down and carried a lightweight changing mat.
Did you let her walk on her own at any points?
We took frequent breaks and took Madison out of the pack to walk around.
My four- year-old nephew, Dylan walked most of the way and only sat in
the stroller when he got tired. He and his mum (my sister) were usually
bringing up the rear of the group. We enticed him along letting him play
a harmonica, which he enjoyed. He even got to ride a horse. A woman approached
on horseback and next thing you know Dylan had her helmet on and was being
led around the road on a horse. .
What is your best memory of the trip?
It
was walking high up on a trail between Fanore and Ballyvaughan on the
last day of our hike. You could see the different shades of the ocean,
from a light aqua near the shore to a deep navy blue further out in the
Atlantic. We could see down to the road where the cars looked like little
matchbox toys. The sun was shining, the sky was blue and everyone was
in high spirits. Madison and Dylan were taking turns playing the harmonica.
My brother sat on a rock and attempted to play the Irish flute. The kids
loved it and chimed in with the harmonica. We were together doing something
adventurous and healthy.
Were there any negative points?
Parts of the trail were on the same roads as cars. We walked single
file against traffic but occasionally a car didn't appear to see us and
we would all jump off the road. We weren't in any real danger but we didn't
want to take chances.
