Baby-friendly restaurants

Q: "I'll shortly be visiting London with my 10-month-old son and wondered if you could give me some advice on baby-friendly places to eat out. Can you suggest a few restaurants that don't mind the presence of babies?"

A: London's restaurants are slowly getting better at providing facilities for children, but your best bet is still to head for the big themed places. The following are all in central London:

Rainforest Cafe
20 Shaftesbury Avenue, W1, tel: 020 7434 3111; Piccadilly Circus tube
Meals: noon-10.30pm Mon-Thurs; noon-11.3-pm Fri; 11.30am-11.30pm Sat; 11.30am-10.30pm Sun
American-style food (burgers, fries etc) and a jungle-style decor, complete with wild animal noises and waterfalls. There's a set children's menu, face-painters and more.

Smollensky's on the Strand
105 Strand Street WC2, tel: 020 7497 2101; Charing Cross tube/rail.
Meals: noon-midnight Mon-Wed; noon-12.30am Thurs-Sat.
Buzzing brasserie with loads going on for kids: magicians and clowns at weekend lunchtimes, a Punch and Judy show on Saturdays and a magic show on Sundays (both at 2.30pm). There's also face painting, toys and crayons and a play area.

The Big Easy
332-334 King's Road SW3, tel: 020 7352 4071; Sloane Square tube then 11,19,22 bus
Meals: noon-midnight Mon-Thurs; noon-12.30pm Fri, Sat; noon-11.30pm Sun
Has good facilities for children, from highchairs and crayons to a special kid's menu.

Also look out for the TGI Friday chain, whose restaurants are well-geared up for children. Most branches offer crayons, balloons and toys and a magician on Sundays. Call 01908 669911 for your nearest branch.
