Where to stay

Hotels, inns and B&Bs

Porth Tocyn Hotel, Abersoch, North Wales
This hotel, situated on the Lleyn Peninsula, has been praised by many travel magazines and hotel guides for managing the almost impossible - combining all the practicalities of a family hotel with the facilities of a luxury hotel. Children have their own area within the hotel to which they can escape from annoying adults, with a TV, videos, and play station. There's also a conservatory with table tennis and other board games. Parents can make use of a fridge and microwave in this area and if you need some help with the washing it can be arranged at a small cost. High chairs and listening devices are available on request, as is babysitting from off-duty live-in staff.

Price: Best to ask hotel directly as there are many different options available for family accommodation, at different prices

Druidstone Hotel, Broad Haven, Pembrokeshire
Don't be put off by the eccentric website - The Times thought this was a good family hotel and on inspection it certainly seems to be cosy and welcoming if rather bizarre! Its position commands spectacular sea views and while the bedrooms aren't luxurious they are comfortable and suitable for families. Five of them offer en suite accommodation while the other six share family-style bathrooms. There is a children's supper in the Farmhouse Kitchen every night at 6pm and the owners are very keen on encouraging families to feel as if the hotel is their second home.

Prices: From £90 for one double and one single

Astonwood Hotel, Llandudno

The hotel is only two minutes from the famous Victorian pier and promenade and is also near the tram station, ski slopes and cable cars. The residents' lounge serves free tea and coffee all day. Children under two years of age stay free while those aged 2-12 are charged at half the adult price.

Prices: From £24pppn for an en-suite room

Dolbrodmaeth Riverside Hotel, Snowdonia
This is definitely a hotel for families who like to be active in the great outdoors! It is a country house hotel with 11 en-suite rooms, some of which can accommodate families, and all of which offer complimentary tea and coffee making facilities, TV and other extras. The restaurant overlooks the river and gardens and the hotel itself is situated in four acres of gardens and grasslands. Accordingly, all sorts of sports and activities can be arranged such as horse riding, bird watching, mountain or quad biking, walking and fishing. Children can print out an activity sheet on the hotel's website and potentially win a prize if they bring it on arrival!

Prices: From £95 per family room per night incl breakfast (2 adults and 2 children aged under 14) - please note that the website states these are 2006 prices!
