First Aid and Prevention Tips

Don't let your holidays turn into one big disaster zone, use these preventative measures to help avoid medical calamity - so you can relax on your travels...

How to avoid...

Insect stings and bites

  • Use insect repellent from a pharmacist.
  • Explain to your toddler the consequences of playing with or annoying insects.
  • Give him protective shoes to wear and don't dress him in brightly coloured clothes.
Sunburn, blisters and heat rash
  • Keep your baby out of the sun, especially between 10am to 3pm, when UV rays are most prevalent.
  • Regularly apply a sunscreen of at least SPF15.
  • Protect toddlers in a legionnaire's cap, loose clothes and sunglasses.
  • Make sure your child drinks plenty of liquids.
Heat exhaustion
  • Offer drinks of water regularly.
  • Toddlers are more prone to heat exhaustion than babies because they are often running around, so make sure they have regular breaks to rest and cool down.
Diarrhoea
  • Avoid ice in drinks or homemade ice lollies and ice cream if in under-developed countries.
  • Provide cooled, boiled water to drink.
  • Use spring water rather than mineral water for making up feeds if you can't boil water.
  • Make sure food is cooked properly and avoid salads, seafood and uncooked foods.
Travel sickness
  • Avoid activities that involve looking down into the lap when travelling by car.
  • Buy antihistamines from the pharmacist for over-twos.
  • Provide plenty of fresh air.
Sand in eyes
  • Give your baby protective sunglasses, if you can get him to keep them on!
