I feel you can’t go wrong with this car

Test length: 1 week
Parent Panel review by stephanie - review date 23 May 2007

We have owned people carriers, or buses, as my husband prefers to call them, for years. Now, what I really like about the Zafira is that it's a really comfortable car for 5 most of the time, but when you want to take extra passengers the seats reveal themselves oh-so easily. You don't need to store the extra seats in the garage or cause a hernia getting them in or out of the car like the afore-mentioned buses; they're always there, stored under the floor of the boot space. I have never seen space this well organised or so flexible - you can go from 2 to 7 seats in less than a minute, we tried it!

This car has all the usual gadgets and gizmos of most modern cars (although the lower price models are slightly lacking in this department) plus plenty of storage for the big things but it's a bit short on those useful little cubby-holes. It has a huge windscreen and feels light and airy although it is quite noisy on motorways because of its big cabin.

I feel you can't go wrong with this car - it can accommodate a growing family beautifully, it is reasonably priced for what feels like a luxury car and the Zafira has a good reliability record.

Upsides
  • Very flexible seating
  • Doesn't drive like a bus
  • Spacious & comfy
  • Isofix fittings on outer rear second-row seats
  • Front and side airbags are standard with curtain airbags on higher-spec models
  • Smart, sassy styling
  • Zafira's good reliability record
Downsides
  • No airbags for optional third row of seating
  • Slightly tricky sliding mechanism to allow passengers into third row
  • Bit noisy on motorways
  • An over-sized, clumpy handbrake
  • As usual with people carriers - when it's full of people there's not much luggage space
  • Could do with more little cubby-holes for storage

Best Feature: The flexible seating and despite its enormous capacity it drives like a car not a bus
Worst Feature: Annoying clumpy handbrake
Verdict: Can accommodate a growing family beautifully

"A REALLY UNPLEASANTLY NOISY CAR"
I'm sorry, but I can't agree with the other reviews for this car. Did the other reviewers have a 1944 Jeep as their previous car?

There is a little mention of noise on the motorway in other reviews but, in fact, this car MAKES THE MOST DREADFUL ROW on motorways.

It is an absolute stinker and I am warning any potential buyer to avoid this car like the plague if you do any motorway mileage at all.

I have to limit my speed to 65mph on the motorway because of the painful row the car makes.

I implore you to test drive the car on a variety of road surfaces before you consider buying one if you don't want to become as bitter as I am about mine.

The dealer has been no help and I paid £23000 for my fully-specced car.

Do a google search on 'Noisy Vauxhall' and read the chorus of complaints if you don't believe me

Beware!!!!!!

"I love it!"
I own a Vauxhall Zafira and it is just the best car ever. It's roomy but isn't like a 'van' in looks. The seats fold nice and flat so you can have a massive boot if you prefer.

It's true when you have all the seats up there's not a lot of room for storage but I have a Quinny Zap buggy and that requires very little room.

My Maxi Cosi Priori XP car seat fits in here very securely.

The children have stacks and stacks of room and leg room.

When we have to go out as a family with my parents, this is the car we all bundle in as we can all fit in comfortabley.

My one, and only complaint about my Zafira is that the surround of the window is a little thick and this does obscure vision when cornering sometimes.

Other than that an A1 little MPV.
