Fills a gap in the market, perhaps only a niche, though

Parent Panel review by Clara - review date 22 January 2007
I was recommended these bottles at a feeding clinic as my girl had trouble feeding. She had difficulty with various teats, got very tired feeding and couldn't seem to settle to the right flow of teat, as there was always a gap in flow whilst the air vent cleared. She doesn't have this problem with the Mam bottles as the air vents in through the bottom of the bottle, not through or near the teat.

Good points: The small size is 160ml, good for expressed milk as EBM doesn't tend to go up as high in volume as formula milk, but the usual standard is 125ml for a small bottle, which is too small. The teats are a great shape for a baby used to latching on a breast. The larger size bottle comes with the next size up of teat attached, instead of the usual con job of a 9oz bottle with a newborn teat on it.

Bad points: It's quite hard to re-assemble the bottom valve after sterilising, and if you do it wrong the milk pours out of the side of the bottle. They take up more room in the steriliser with the extra bits and pieces of the bottom valve. It is really hard to heat up a milk feed, say pre-mix cartons or EBM from the fridge, cos the valve at the bottom is so bulky you can stand it in water for hours and it's still cold!

Best Feature: The teat shape
Worst Feature: Getting it back together again!
Verdict: It either suits you or it doesn't...

"ONLY BOTTLE I RECOMMEND"
I bought these because after 3 months my avent bottles started leaking and we were due to go away for the weekend. I ran down to boots and they were attractive so I bought them. I have never looked back. They are great quality in that they dont look dirty like some bottles do when they have been washed for a few months. They are easy to clean because the bottom comes off. The air is pushed out through the bottom so it is easier for your baby to feed. All of my friends bought them after me for various reasons and I am told by them they are fantastic for colic- say goodbye to infacol!

"MAM anti colic bottles"
I had bought tommee tipee bottles with anti-colic teets and they didn't work for my son at all.(not sure what the anti-colic bottles are like in this brand)I had heard about the mam anti-colic bottles from a friend and found some good reviews on this site so I bought some. They seem to work much better than my previous ones and would recomend mums to be to be to purchase these anyway because a baby with colic is not much fun.I found them money well spent even though they may be a pain to sterilise as they have to be done in pieces it is worth it to have a happier baby.

"Must Have Product!"
Absolutely Genius!

I was bought one by a well-meaning relative, who was feeling sympathetic to my first Sons horrendous reflux & cholic problems & I must say that I received it with a kind of 'yeah, whatever!' attitude, but I found that the bottle made a total difference & my Son seemed to settle almost straight away to keeping more of his feeds down. It was such a relief to finally see him comfortable! So we immediately dumped our brand new clutch of Avent bottles & replaced them with a battalion of lovely MAM Ultivents! ...not only are they an excellent design & very sturdy & well made, but they also look beautiful too... The teats seem to be by far the most natural feeling ones on the market & my second child was just as happy using them as well... I do agree that they can be slightly irritating to get back together, but I found that we got used to that really quickly & pretty soon you don't have time for it to occur to you at all!

I'm now looking forward to re-using the same bottles for my third child in February 2009! ...well done MAM!

"Brilliant!!"
Madison was a nightmare with food from the word go. The hospital bottles were too fast and she was very sicky, so was very hungry. I work in a baby room and have seen most of the makes of bottles at the moment. I chose Avent because they seemed to most popular. Madi couldn't latch on to them and was still really hungry, i went out and brought every bottle you can imagen, Dr Browns, Nuk... she was a constant wind machine, perminant belly ache. Then we stumbled upon these and honestly they transformed my/our life! She has had the smaller bottles and she got on so well we ended up increasing her feeds, and now were on the stage two bottles. Shes 7 weeks old now, nearly 8 and she sleeps from 11 till half 7. I am SURE it is because of these bottles. There gorgeous colours, we have blue, torquise, pink and purple! The only downpoint, well, more niggle, is the mission to put them together. But once you've done it a few times your just used to doing it.!

"What a great bottle!"
I bought the MAM Ultivent bottles when my daughter was 10 months old only because of BPA. I was using the NUK First Choice bottles. I really liked them, but unfortunately they contained BPA. So I started to research which bottles did not contain BPA, and there were only two in my area, Medela and MAM Ultivent. Medela is more for breastfeeding mothers, and their necks are too narrow for formula scoops. So I chose the MAM Ultivent, and I will never regret it. For one thing, their colors are awesome! Okay that's not a major factor, but it matters, I mean you don't want to see an ugly colored bottle every time! Second, they are so truly anti-colic, I can hear the air coming out when my daughter is drinking! Third, they are BPA Free. Fourth, their nipple is so soft and is only available in Silicone, which is good because Latex is just always a bad choice, as it does cause allergies. Fifth, the cap is sealed so properly that it will never leak, only the cap will get dirty. I just love the design, and I love how the air is just coming out and my daughter doesn't have to be all gassy, not that she ever was. And anyway, AVENT are the worst bottles, they contain BPA and are really dangerous, so to use them would be poisoning your child. I really liked the way they looked and was thinking of buying those, since I've only ever heard good things about them, but ever since I found out they contain BPA, I was like no thank you! So this bottle is GREAT and I recommend it to everyone! The only con, it contains 5 pieces to clean, so that can be a pain, but you get used to it. Oh, and don't sterlize the ring. It might warp and cause major leaking.

The best thing about it, it's not so expensive!

"fantastic"
I bought these bottles while pregnant with my daughter on the recommendation of my sister who used them for her own child. I have to say I found them fantastic, my little girl loved the teat straight away-it is smaller than a lot of normal teats so they dont have to have their mouth open quite so wide! It also has a really nice silky feel to the teat-which I suppose is supposed to feel like the breast?

They are quite fiddly to assemble in the beginning but after the first few goes it really does become second nature. My daughter never suffered from trapped wind and I really do believe it was thanks to the mam bottles. I loved the fact that they were coloured-and my favourite was obviously PINK!!

One word of warning to anyone thinking of purchasing these bottles, when standing the bottles in hot water to heat them up for a feed, always make sure that you take the lid off as if you dont it causes a vacuum in the bottle which draws in he hot water through the valve at the bottom. I only found this out through ringing the Mam careline-they dont print this in the instructions for some reason!!

"Great for babies with reflux"
Our little girl had severe reflux, so we tried lots of different bottles to see which suited her best. These won hands down.

They do take longer to clean and put together than others, but it was definitely worth it - it made a noticeable difference to the reflux and L took to them very easily. A friend of mine had the Dr Browns for her son, but they were a lot more expensive and didn't seem to make any more difference than these did for my daughter, so I would say these are very good value.

After a while we did find we had to be increasingly careful about fitting the valve properly so that the milk didn't come pouring out as we filled the bottle(!), but it wasn't really a problem, and once they're assembled, we've never had any trouble with unexpected leaking from the top, which we had with others.

An added bonus was the pretty colours (we had pink, purple, turquoise and yellow, but I think they only do pink and blue now) but that just shows how shallow I am! ;)

"Looks nice, but a hassle"
I've received this bottle as a gift, as my little one was suffering from colic for 3 weeks. I use the avent bottles but must add that the colic disappeared long before I tried the MAM bottle, so no idea if it works or not. The bottle looks nice and my daughter did like the teat immediately - just as much as the usual teat on the Avent bottles. However, its a real hassle. There are 5 pieces to clean and to put together (no fun if you have a screaming baby in your arms that wants feeding immedaiately!). It is tricky to put in the steam steriliser (mine is from AVENT)and uses a lot of space. But worst of all, I found out in the middle of the night that it doesn't fit in the Avent bottle warmer AND it leaks from both the top and the bottom, completely soaking both myself and the baby! I went back to my hassle-free Avent bottles. If these would be the only bottles to avoid my daughter having colic, I would however use them, but thankfully she loves her Avent bottles :-)

"Brilliant bottles!"
My twin boys were 7 weeks early and feeding was always an issue with Luke. We tried Avent bottles and he wouldn't manage hardly any without the teat collapsing. We then went to Dr Browns and these were good but he dribbled constantly, there was a river of milk flowing from his mouth.

WE then moved to these, what a difference, he can take the teat in his mouth really well. There are no dribbles and the anti colic valve really helps windy babies.

They look good in the blue, the tops seal really well and prevent leaks. The only downside is the fiddly washing up. Brilliant bottles, a lifesaver!

"Absolutely brilliant!"
These were the third type of bottle we tried! We had Avent bottles to start with as they came with the steriliser but she didn't get on well at all - the teats were too huge for her tiny mouth, she never got a good suction and drunk hardly anything. She then got terrible wind so we tried the BFree bottles...what a faff they were, the teats were so soft she kept sucking them flat!

Finally we found these...they look great and the teat is brilliant for babies with small mouths! She took to them really well and we never looked back. In fact we have just bought 6 smaller ones for the new addition.

They do come in quite a few pieces and can be a pain to get in the steraliser (we have an Avent steam one) but once you get the knack, it is done easily!

I would recommend these bottles to anyone, they are fab!

"Love these bottles"
When I stopped breastfeeding I gave my Daughter an Avent bottle and she screamed and cried as she could not latch on. So I bought these bottles and she latched on straight away. The air vent is great and she never really suffered from wind after a bottle. The only problem I have is putting them back together to make up a feed.

"Great if put together right!"
We used MAM's when Ella was first born and she fed really well from them and never had any wind problems. Unfortunately after a few weeks they all started to leak, we took them apart and put them together repeatedly but still leaked!! we then switched to Avent but the bottles seemed to scratch quite quickly. I have since found out that MAM had a product recall after we bought the first lot, so I bought some more and they have been great!!! No leaks and Ella loves them!! The pretty colours are also really nice!!! I would defintely reccommend them.

"Cant live without!"
I started my 18mth old on Avent bottles - useless, he had bad wind and couldn't suck on the teats so stopped feeding. I thought about buying cheaper bottles but tried Mams and they worked great. My son fed well and had no wind. They're good value for money too. My daughter started on the smaller bottles no problem and is piling on the ounzes.

Cleaning is great as there are no tricky corners to clean and the bottles are easy to put together. They don't leak if put together properly and you can hear the air leaving if you listen to the bottom. Would recommend everyone to buy Mam bottles and most of their other stuff, the soothers are great too!
