Great Pocket Nappy
Parent Panel review by Amanda
- review date 24 February 2006
A pocket nappy has a waterproof outer and an absorbent (sometimes fleece) inner. There is a gap at the back of the waist which allows you to put additoinal padding into the gap between the two fabrics. Although overall I've come down in favour of using a shaped nappy and separate wrap I do like this pocket nappy. It is very easy to put on and fastens with poppers which Olivia cannot undo! The inner is all fleece so use of a paper liner is optional, and the fleece creates a stay dry layer against baby's skin. You can put as much or as little padding into the pocket as you like depending how much absorbency you need. Good for the end of the day if needing to do a change with only an hour or two to go until bath time.
I loved the pretty pale pink outer (and I think there is a good choice of other colours). This is the only pocket nappy I've tried, but I'd be very tempted to get a couple more. I probably wouldn't use on a small baby, but good for a toddler, not least as you can put on them while they are standing up!
Olivia hasn't done a poo in it yet, so that is yet to be tested, though I'm sure I'll find out at some point!
The popper fastenings at the leg and waist make for a very good fit - lots of adjustability.
It is quite an expensive option because you'd need to buy different sizes if using from birth to potty training, but it is a very easy to use, and versatile nappy. If I wanted a one piece nappy I would go for this over an All In One every time because of the flexibility and faster drying.
Best Feature: Colour choice of outers and fleece innner
Worst Feature: May not contain poos as well as a 2 piece system
Verdict: A very versatile, easy to use nappy

"Great for the change bag"
We had a few of these when we used the nappy laundry service with DS.
They are absolutely fab. As easy to put on as a disposable and quite adjustable with the poppers.
As its a pseudo-all-in-one it does dry quickly too, but not as quickly as the Imse Vimse.
Great if you are using pre-folds.

"Great Nightime Toddler Nappy"
The Fuzzi Bunz stuffable nappy has to be the best nappy I have used for nightime for my toddler (aged 3 years). It is so easy to use and never leaks, even on a heavy wetter at night. I use the extra large size stuffed with old terry nappies and it absorbs so much. They are not too bulky either so great for skinny ones like mine and the popper fastening I use is so easy to fit snugly. Definately the best nightime nappy I have found.

"slim fitting and easy to use"
This nappy is really easy to use. The fleece inner stays really soft against baby's skin no matter how often you wash it and keeps them dry between changes too. The nappy is very slim fitting and can be boosted to suit your needs simply by adding more inserts, microfibre cloths, flannels etc, whatever you have to hand really! Because the outer dries so quickly (under 2 hrs on line in summer or on airer next to radiator) you can save money by buying more inserts than outers. By stuffing it ready to use this nappy is no more difficult than a disposable-and much softer next to baby's skin. I keep a couple in my changing bag for easy changes when out and about

"Best I've tried"
Whilst I was expecting my daughter I purchased about three of each of several brands of real nappy in the first size to try.
I tried all in one, two part, two part shaped and pocket, and at least two types of each.
These are the ones I chose to use, and still do. They are perfect for my daughter. I find that the elastic on two part nappies make her legs sore, and all in one nappies always leak (as did the other pocket nappy I tried).
On the occasions that I have used disposable nappies i.e holidays or staying with family, my daughter has been quite sore, this has not happened with the fuzzy bunz.
I find them really easy to use and care for, my husband can use them too (he had problems with the two part nappies).
These were the only nappy I tried that contained my daughters exploding breast fed baby poo!
The poppers make them much more difficult than a disposable for my daughter to remove herself!
I love the fleecy liner against my daughters eczema prone skin, when you change a wet nappy, the fleece feels dry.
The soft elasticated legs and waist are good for containment, however care must be taken that none of the fleece liner is sticking out of the back otherwise you do end up with wet clothes.
I have used them sucessfully overnight, however extra padding is required.
I have also found that the performance of this nappy varies depending on the stuffing you use. I have found that the wonderfulls microfibre works well as it is shaped, and although it is more expensive than other recomended 'stuffing', it comes in two parts, a big and a small pad' the small pad is good for the first size nappy and it clips to the big pad as a booster for bigger nappies, making them more economical in the long run as you don't need to buy different ones for different sized nappies. Due to the synthetic fibres used to make these nappies, they are easy to wash and dry, and don't stain. They are also slim fitting and light weight, and quite attractive as nappies go. Other than cost, I can't can't think of many negative comments to make about this nappy, however, I passed on my variety of cloth nappies on to my friend to try on her little boy, and she found they all leaked.
Babies come in all different shapes and sizes so I would advise anyone considering trying real nappies not to go out and buy the birth to potty pack of nappies based on what they look like, or even what you read in reviews as the only real way you are going to find out what works for your baby is to try them (I know of people who have spent over £200 on nappies they can't use). Some companies do trial packs, and I think that babykind do a cash back nappy trial. Or you could buy a few different brands second hand to try first.

"Fuzzi Bunz Nappies"
We've used these occasionally alongside other washable nappies. They're great if you want a quick change when out and about, but with only one insert it soon leaks and if you overstuff then containment is not that good. They're expensive too if you compare them to a two part system. We've used them as a swim nappy (with no stuffing) but I'm not sure how they'd stand up to chlorine over the longer term. My overall opinion - OK but not great !

"great for changes while out"
I have only used a fuzzi bunz for a toddler so can't comment on small baby use. But I love it, I can stuff it with as much or as little as I like. We usually have one or two in the change bag as once you have stuffed them with something absorbant they ready to go just pop on like a disposable, very easy and no fuss when changing while out. I have used them overnight and use hemp and microfibre to stuff them when I need lots of absorbancy. Hemp is nice a slim too. You have to have one of these in your collection.

"Follow up post on my review"
My Fuzzy Bunz has now had to cope with an 'explosive poo' from my daughter and I'm sorry to say it failed dismally - leaks out of both legs down to the knees...as I suspected would happen. So, great for end of the day, last change before bathtime etc. but I wouldn't use it if I thought a poo was due!

"good choice"
once I realised what I was supposed to do, I really liked this nappy. it is simple and works well. my only negative would be that it seems a little loose on my skinny boy. it looks comfortable as it is so lacking in bulk.

"EASY TO USE"
V. EASY TO USE. LOVED ALL-IN-ONE SYSTEM. V. FUSS FREE. GOOD POPPER ADJUSTABILITY, QUITE SIMPLE & EASY. BUT DISLIKED SYNTHETICNESS OF FABRICS, WHAT A SHAME...BUT ABSORBANCY WAS VERY GOOD. NO LEAKS! IN TERMS OF COMFORT: SOFT & SNUG FOR BABY. WELL-FITTING ROUND THE WAIST. BUT WHAT A SHAME ABOUT SYNTHETIC FABRICS...ALL-IN-ALL A GOOD, EASY TO USE NAPPY THAT'S VERY HASSLE FREE.

"Love it"
Love this - firstly, it's a pretty attractive real nappy, lovely and slim. It's a pocket nappy -waterproof outer, absorbent fleece inner. Gap at the top to put in padding. Very simple idea really - less complicated than some of the other nappies i tested and it worked well for that. It fitted my baby perfectly, looked nice and comfy on her and I had no leaks, no troubles with it at all, even with poo. It washed and dried well and relatively quickly. However, it seems expensive as you'd need to go through all the different sizes if you used them from birth, so that does let it down, but all in all, a super nappy. I think I'm going to have to buy myself some more!

"Very slimline but bad leaker"
This nappy is one of the most slimline on the market as you don't need an additional wrap with it. It is also one of the most comfortable and is incredibly easy to put on.
It's only downside (although this is a pretty big downside)is that it really does leak. The nappy itself comes with 2 slimline boosters that insert in. However, even with these boosters plus another booster that we added in, it still leaked both wee and poo. I wouldn't, therefore, recommend this nappy if you have a heavy pooer or weeer (as we do!)
