Fab nappies!

Parent Panel review by Racheal - review date 11 December 2006
These are fast becoming my most favourite nappy, and I'm sure Izzy would agree. We started off with shaped size one nappies, but they were a waste of money as Izzy quickly outgrew them. I have a range of nappies in size two but have just ordered some more Mother Ease One Size.

There are lots of things I like about the nappy. Firstly, it looks so comfy and it is easily adjustable to fit any size or shape. Some of my other nappies can go a bit crispy if I can't dry them outside but these nappies stay soft whatever you do to them. They also dry a lot faster than some of the nappies I've tried.

I find they're relatively slim fitting, which can be important when trying to find clothes to fit that cloth nappied bum. I use them with the pop in booster, but any booster would work as well and the nappy still doesn't look too bulky. I use the nappies in conjunction with Mother Ease airflow wraps, which works perfectly for Izzy.

I have several friends who are converting to cloth now they can see how easy it is, and how much cheaper, better for the environment etc. The nappies aren't the cheapest option out there, especially if you buy the pop in booster. However, if you used them from birth, you'd only need to spend around £180 on 20 nappies, meaning you'd never spend another penny on them. And because of the quality, they'd last through several babies and the resale value is high.

I wish I'd found these nappies earlier but now I have, we're sticking with them!

These are fantastic value for money, they are a birth to potty nappy and will save you £'s rather than using disposible, they are a soft terry towelling and need a PUL wrap on the outside. These come in plain or animal print.

"Almost as easy as disposables"
I spent a lot of time researching reuseable nappies whilst pregnant - hours and hours hunched over a hot keyboard reading product tests just like those offered by this website and after much searching these nappies seemed to get recurring high scores and looked cute so i bit the bullet and bought the birth to toddler set.

The set I bought came with 20 nappies, 12 wraps in 4 sizes, 10 boosters, 2 rolls of paper liners a nappy pail and a nappy mesh bag. The website i bought them from were fab and did me the rainbow coloured nappies for the same price as the white ones and all coloured wraps as, despite it only being a cosmetic detail, I fancied a change from the usual boring white.

But onto the nappies themselves - being in the rainbow colours they are beautiful vivid colours - mine come in the girl pack meaning i have them in pink, yellow, purple, orange, green and turquoise. I also have wraps in various designs of safari, ocean, grasslands and savannah.

The nappies are designed to take the user all the way from birth to potty utilising a system of poppers. At newborn they fold at the top to shorten the nappy and the second row of poppers is used to cinch the nappy in snug at the waist, the next size up is still folded over using the second row of poppers but using the ones further apart. From there you can unfold the top to make the nappies taller and use the top row of poppers. Eventually you use the top row of poppers but use the ones further apart. This gives you options to have the nappy fit well no matter what size or shape your baby is. To be honest my little one didnt start wearing them until she was 8 weeks old as they were too bulky at first but she was born 5-12 so most people would probably find them suitable either from birth or at least after the first couple of weeks. They are not the most slimline nappies around and definately will not give the snug fit of a disposable but the only real thing i bear in mind is to have looser vests to allow for this and even then most trousers still fit her quite well.

The soft micro terry is fairly absorbent and soft though does require at least 3 washes to bring it up to full absorbency. However, once the baby is over a couple of months old I feel the booster is needed and this is where my only gripe with these nappies comes in. The booster is snap in and uses the top row of poppers meaning you struggle to use it if you are still folding the top of the nappy over. My little one was born small and remains lean even at 6 months old meaning she still has the nappy folded over but is a heavy wetter. I have found you can pop the booster in, leaving the top folded over and not poppered as it will stay secure under the wrap but it does make the nappy more bulky - and these are not the most slimline ones around to begin with. I did manage to eke out an extra couple of months using fleece pads but now am probably going to have to buy some proper sit in boosters until i can fit the snap in ones properly. Its a minor niggle though as it will give me extra boosters which is never a bad thing. The boosters themselves are actually very absorbent.

The wraps come from in 5 different sizes - small, medium, med-large, large and extra large which makes them suitable from birth to about 35lb. The wraps i use are airflow which secure with poppers and have 3 poppers on each side at the waist and same on the legs meaning you can adjust them to your baby no matter what their shape. They also require several washes to soften up the elastic on the legs but once this is done i find they hold the moisture into the nappy well whilst allowing enough air through that your little ones skin can breathe and, fingers crossed, my little one has never suffered with her skin whilst in these. The designs again are eye catching and attractive. The wraps also come in Rikki design which fasten with velcro though i have not tried these.

The last part of the nappy is the paper liner - its a one way liner meaning the urine is kept away from the skin and really do their job. They also catch any poo so you can flush them straight down the toilet (yes they are biodegradeable) without the nappies getting too dirty. And if they dont get pooed on i have found they actually go through the washing machine and can be used again up to 3 times! Small money saving tip but every little helps and 6 months on im only a 3rd of the way through my 2nd roll of liners.

The whole set up of wrap, nappy, booster and liner sounds faffy but once you are used to doing it i find i can change my little one just as fast as putting disposables on and for days out i make some up with all the layers then do the poppers up and put them in my changing bag ready to pop on. Dirties go in a nappy sack and get brought home and since i dry pail there are no buckets of horrible pooey water in my house just a bucket treated with tea tree oil to keep it smelling sweet between washes. Once washed the nappies come up lovely and fresh looking again - i wash mine at 40 degrees with the odd blast at 60 every now and again to refresh them and it keeps them looking great. I do tumble dry them as i like the softness but if you are trying particularly hard to be eco friendly its not totally essential.

Best of all is the money i save - i use disposables at night for my own convenience (though on the occasions i have used the motherease they have stood up to the job) or for long days out (for short days i still use the motherease) but on average use 2 disposables a day or 15 a week if you inclde days out meaning one of the big packs lasts me 3 or 4 weeksrather than a week as my friends with disposables only tend to spend. And should i change my mind and decide to have anymore they are there ready and waiting to go again! Can't argue with that kind of value for money really. So overall i would recommend them to anyone (and frequently do)

"motherease bamboo"
having tried normal motherease as part of a trial kit we ordered bamboo ones to use. I can not recommend them highly enough - compared with ordinary motherease they are much softer after washing and drying time is reasonable

"Excellent nappies, really do the job."
I have used these nappies from about 5 months (my son was prem and so we bought some smaller cloth nappies to start with). My son is now nearly 2 1/2 and we have used them constantly. They rarely leak and he is a very heavy wetter. My husband and mum can also use them with no problems and he will choose them over disposables if given the choice so they must be comfortable. He has just outgrown them as he is big for his age but I got some expanders for £2 a pair from twinkle on the web and these have allowed me to continue using them until he is ready to potty train. Hopefully not too long as I am planning on using them on his little sister due in 3 days time!

"Got to be the best!"
I have used these wonderful nappies from the outset with baby number 2. He is a heavy wetter and a fidget, but the nappys do him proud. What's more, the nappies I have were used on my daughter first. So I cannot rate them highly enough on value for money. I have found other "copy"nappies are now on the market like these, but having bought a few more, I can confirm they are not half as good quality. I have now been back to www.earthlets.co.uk and bought some more to top up supplies and am very excited to find them in the most beautiful colour ways now! By the way, they are also much cheaper than this website states! I cannot recommend them highly enough! LOVE EM! Would give them higher scores still, if I could!

"great investment"
Bought them to use for baby No3 but started using them for No2 as they are one size. Easy to use, wash and dry. Wraps come in white or with pictures of animals on which are cute. May be a bit big to use on a baby under 2 months. Would suggest them to any mum considering washables.

"not for me"
I am going to be controversial and go against what most people say about these nappies! I don't like them.

I think that they are far too bulky on young babies and I found it tricky to get a good fit round the legs on both my children - skinny boy and chubby girl! They did not contain exploding breastfed poos very well (marginally better than disposables) and I found that as my son got bigger, the nappies just didn't have enough absorbancy, even with the boosters.

However, despite what I have just said, these nappies are lovely and soft on the tummy, unlike aplix fastenings, and the separate booster helps with drying. They wash well (although mine did not get much use having been relegated to the emergency nappy pile, and now sold on!), and remained nice and soft even though we live in a hard water area.

Good if you are on a budget, don't want to fork out for sized nappies and don't mind changing every couple of hours. They still fit my son at 2 1/2 years. No good at night without enormous amounts of extra boosting.

Just one more thing - Motherease do make the most reliable nappy wraps!

"The original & best"
I really find these nappies a doddle to use. Once you get used to them you can change them in a flash. I use the normal unbleached ones with a stay dry pop in pad. It's good for upto 4 hours. The polyester layer on pad wicks the moisture away from the bum. I also use the ME airflow wraps which are the best in my opinion, can't be dealing with velcro as never remember to do them up before washing! My ME's dry by the radiators in the winter. If I put them there in the eve they are normally all dry by the next afternoon. They can go a little hard as I have hard water, but just shake them. I wash every other day. I have 18. I use Bumbles for the nightime (see bumble review!) with hemp boosters. Never get leaks. I have never had leaky pooh since stopping disposeables. Brilliant.

"Reliable, will convert the masses to reusables!"
I'd heard a lot about Motherease - everyone seems to use them. I was not surpised, therefore, when I tried them out for myself, to find they are an excellent nappy. I thoroughly recommend them.

Pros:

1) Good absorbancy

2) Hard wearing

Cons:

1) Bit slow to dry

2) Bulky on smaller babies, as they are one-size-fits-all.

3) I found the poppers a fiddle, especially when my boy was wriggling (most of the time).

4) Bulky in the nappy bucket.

Ease of use: 5

Absorbancy: 5

Washability: 4

Comfort: 4 (the wraps cut into Ruben's legs sometimes.

Shape/fit: 3 (baggy on small bottoms)

Quality/value for money: 4

"The original and the best"
These are the old skool and the best of all Real Nappies for one reason...you can use them from birth to potty. I used pre-folds for the first 4 months and ignored a friends advice to buy motherease - but when my daughter grew out of the pre-folds I tried some Motherease out and they are brilliant.

Now she is bigger I find the poppers really useful as she is starting to open velcro herself, so poppers stay on better.

Also Motherease Wrap is the hands down the best wrap for all nappies, the poppers, the fitting and the nice pattern - all make them the best.

the one bad thing is washing and drying time - the tots bots fluffles dry quicker and don't go so hard like Motherease.

If you don't want to spend loads of time and effort shopping around and just want to buy one brand - I would recommend Motherease. Buy 4 wraps and 15 nappies and you should be ok.

They aren't cheap but they are the best.

Ease of use - 4 (working out the poppers and folds can be tricky)

Absorbency - 5

Washability - 4

Comfort - 5

Shape/fit (around babies legs etc) - 5

"you can't go wrong with a motherease wrap"
This work-horse of a nappy from Canada is a parent's favourite and rightly so...

I find popper nappies really easy to use, and the poppers have never broken on my Motherease nappies, unlike some other brands.

ME nappies are not as quick to dry as microfibre nappies, so best if you have space for drying or an outside line.

The fit is great - lovely shape and slimline. I would expect leaks after 2-3 hours and I wouldn't put my 23 month old in this nappy over night (tbh only a massively padded nappy at night will do!).

I thoroughly recommend the more expensive "stay dry" version which means the baby's bum isn't in contact with the wet cotton layer. But they are more expensive, and ME are not the cheapest on the market. They do have a very high resale value though.

However, what Motherease to REALLY well are their outer wraps. Having tried out many wraps, I can confidently say that ME wraps come out tops. They very rarely leak, fit different sized babies as you can adjust the poppers at the waist and leg, wash really well and dry really quick. They also have a "breathable" feel to the PUL material they are made of, not at all plasticky. And they also come in laods of fun designs!

Ease of use - 5

Absorbency (especially at night time )- 3

Washability - 4

Comfort - 4

Shape/fit - 5

Quality - 4

"Reliable nappy which will last as long as your baby needs it"

The Motherease one size is a classic no-nonsense nappy and in these tests I found that it has yet to be beaten as one to trust.

It can be used from new born right up to potty training - simply adjust the poppers on the front to make it fit your baby - so that makes it great value for money as you are buying one set to last you your babies nappy-time.

It is a great nappy if you have a tumble drier or an outside space to dry the as it does take a while to dry - longer than anything else on your washing line in my tests. However if you live in a small flat then its not ideal.

Motherease also make the best wraps on the market. These come in 3 different sizes so you need to change as your baby grows. These wraps are very waterproof and you only need a few of them as you don't have to wash them unless absolutley necessary - a quick rinse in the sink will keep them fresh and they dry really quickly for use the next time around.

As this is a one-size nappy it isnt always a great fit on your baby which can result in the big-bum effect. However its not a HUGE bum so it is possible to squeeze your baby into normal sized trousers - but they will be a bit tight!

These are always on sale on ebay so they keep their value. Overall a good trustworthy nappy and a good investment.

Ease of use - 3

Absorbency (especially at night time!) - 4

Washability - 4

Comfort - 4

Shape/fit (around babies legs etc) - 3

"Really like these!"
I'm a recent convert to real nappies and so have been building up my stash over the last few months. I started using these with my toddler and so far MotherEase One Size are rapidly emerging as firm favourites amongst my ever growing collection. The resale value is great and they're very durable. Some other nappies I've tried seem to need more love and attention where MEOS can be soaked and washed at 60 without coming to harm. Very impressed with them so far.

"Excellent"
Now using these on my second child and have found them to be great. They are cost effective as you can use them almost from birth (used on DS from 3 weeks and DD from 3 months) until potty training. They air dry quickly so you don't need a tumble drier and we are very impressed by the absorbency. I've tried several shaped nappies but these are still my favourites.

"the best nappies"
I love these nappies and tell all my friends to use them. I did a nappy trial and tested about 20 different nappies. These are by far the best. They never leak and are not as bulky as many I have tried. They wash well and dry best on the line but don't take too long indoors. You can buy ones with a stay dry liner attatched which are more expensive but well worth it. I use them more than I ever thought I would and am becoming a full time user! If you are thinking about money thy also have a good resale value.

"not bad"
Have used these from birth. At times they have caused Fionnuala to wake as so saturated but since using home made fleace liners are alot more effective. They wash well and dry easily either tumble or line dry. The fitting is easy to grasp and the outer wraps are very effevtive and breathable. Fionnuala has never had nappy rash with these. They are bulky though which is not always a bad thing for babies finding their balance. I like them and would recommend them.
