Great with a newborn

Parent Panel review by Kirsty - review date 27 January 2007
This car seat was a great buy and has been in use daily since our daughter arrived - either to transport her in the car or as part of a travel system. Using the seat as part of the silver cross travel system after a c-section was great for me because it attaches to the sleepover chassis individually so was much lighter to push in the early days.

The seat is very well padded and looks extremely comfortable, with the newborn insert it provides superb support for a little one. Having said that the weight limit can be quickly reached if you have a bigger baby, our daughter is 5 months old and at 17.7lb won't be in it for much longer.

Fitting in the car is fairly straightforward once you get the hang of it but clearly takes longer than a seat that clips onto a base. Being a fairly large seat it does require some length of seat belt which is fine in my own car but on a couple of occasions I have struggled when travelling in the car of a friend or relative so if you are buying one do test this first.

When I purchased the seat I was told it was universal and would fit all cars, this seems not to be the case if the seatbelts are short, I was lucky it fitted mine but it would have had to be returned otherwise.

All in all, this is a great car seat and I would recommend it to anyone after a safe, high quality car seat for a newborn.

Best Feature: Safety, extras and comfort for baby
Worst Feature: No click in base and the weight limit

Ease of Use/Instructions:

We removed this from the enormous box it came in and were instantly impressed by the number of extras included. Unfortunately, the instructions were not included, but all credit to Silver Cross, they sent them within two days. Luckily, I was still pregnant then, but we were anxious to familiarise ourselves with the seat - the thought of struggling with it in the car park of the hospital was not a pleasant one. Of course, that still happened, but that was not the fault of the instructions, which were easy to follow. It was more to do with intense sleep deprivation!

The seat requires you to strap it into the car with the seatbelt. You strap your baby into the seat, pull the seatbelt across and around the seat and it's fitted. You will need a long seatbelt for it to fit properly - it doesn't fit in my friend's car, so definitely worth testing it before you buy.

This system of using the seatbelt is easy once you know how, but obviously takes more time than a 'click in' one. The buckles on the seat can sometimes be a little fiddly (could just be that we have butter fingers) and you can pull the adjustment strap with one hand to ensure it is tight enough. There is a handy pocket on the back of the seat where the instructions can be kept and never lost - handy if you have a brain lapse or if grandparents are using it in their car!

Portability:

The seat is as easy as any car seat is to transport, i.e. heavy on the back! and you'll be doing the step-pause-swing-rest-it-on-your leg-walk in no time! There is a nice padded handle however.

Fitting in Car:

This is easy once you know how, but can be a bit fiddly on occasion.

Comfort/Quality:

This is lovely and padded and is excellent quality. It comes with a padded footmuff and 'hood' cover for use outside of the car/when used as part of a travel system. The head rest also looks very comfortable, but obviously I haven't tried it myself(!).

The handle moves with ease and allows you to use it as a rocker, in a stable position for feeding and the carrying position. As part of a travel system, it is easy to fit onto the carriers, but these are often difficult to remove to the pram/pushchair.

This car seat is only for use up to 22lbs so you may need the next group seat sooner than you think if you have a 'bouncing baby' like we do!

Best Feature: The extras and the comfort factor.
Worst Feature: Weight limit of 22lbs.
Verdict: Fabulous quality, would buy again.

"Siver Cross Ventura car seat - BEWARE!"
Being new parents, we wanted the best that we could afford for our little one. The Silver Cross 3D Travel system was the best by far in the reviews we had read, and value for money, and more so, the lightweight chassis compared to similar systems. The pram is very good and snug, and easy to use, once you get the hang of switching between that and the infant carrier. Walking with the system is ok, while on a typical 'smooth' High-street footpath. It is not that good on more uneven surfaces. However, I persoannly have found problems with the system - the extendable handles even at the highest point, are still quite low. I am exactly 6 feet tall (fairly average for a man) and the only way I could walk the pram while keeping a straight back would be to either walk with my knees bent, or to borrow the long arms of an orangutan!

Warning!!!!

THE VENTURA INFANT CARRIER (CARSEAT) DOES NOT FIT ALL THE TYPICAL UNIVERSAL 3 POINT SEAT BELTS. We have a Golf Mk 4 and it takes both of us to fit the seat in correctly and safely. I commomly have to use my teeth to hold the belt out fully extended to fit the thing so that I can use both hads (and boy do you need both hands). The belt needs to be fed through what feels like the Krypton Factor assault course with an added maze, around and through the seat outer casing.

When we bought it, one of the store assisants quite helpfully took a diplay model to our car to ensure compatability. They said it was a little fiddly, but nothing that would present any significant problems, and that after a couple of times using it would be fine.... NO!!! One of the side belt slots is angled in the wrong direction to how the belt fits around the carrier. A tad unsafe I would say.

I consider myself quite dextrous and logical - this contaption has really tested my normally placid patience.

If you look to buy this system, please try and fit the car seat 2 or 3 times before contemplating buying it, to make sure it really fits.

I can't wait until our baby is old enough for the next stage car seat.

"Poor quality"
We bought this car seat as we thought Silvercross was a trusted and quality product. We ended up being very disappointed with the whole travel system. We didn't feel the car seat was a very secure fit. Out of the four cars we tried it in, it only fitted in one. When used with the wheels it didn't seam to lock on properly, it "rocked" when clipped in. The wheels constantly wobble and want to go in a different direction to you. We would not recommend this product.

"silver cross ventura seat."
Was fine, until the mechanism on the handle went whilst carrying our baby. The seat spun upside down, good job she was strapped in secure!!!

Silver Cross seemed aware of the fault.
