Folding pushchair A lightweight, quick folding pushchair that collapses into an upright umbrella shape is the most compact style for travel; you can carry it in one hand, it fits in the boot of the car or easily goes with the luggage. Rain and sun covers are available for this type of pushchair.

Insect net You can also buy nets designed to fit over pushchairs, (and infant carrier car seats and prams, too) to protect against insects.

Baby carrier For places where a pushchair is impractical, a baby carrier is an excellent alternative. Use one designed to go on your front when your baby is young and lightweight, or a back carrier if your baby can sit up. Weather protecting accessories may also be available with baby carriers.

Car seat If you’re hiring a car abroad, check at the time of booking that a suitable child car seat is available with the car. The problem with taking your own car seat is that you can’t be sure it will fit securely into the hired car model. If you do take your own car seat, it is possible for it to go into an airplane luggage hold. It may also be possible for your child to sit in it on the aircraft, secured to the aircraft seat with belts in situ - check this with your airline when booking.

Travel sickness treatments If your child is prone to travel sickness, you can buy travel sickness pills suitable from one year, or travel bands worn on the wrist which are a drug-free alternative to relieving nausea, although they may not work for all children.
