Tesco Kid's Sun Protection

Green Spray Lotion SPF 30

Price: £2.63 for 200 ml

Score:

Babyworld verdict: A spray-on system is very cost effective because it seems to reduce waste - this one is very smooth and effortless to apply.

What you get:
A spray-on lotion which is coloured pale green before it's rubbed in. Includes vitamin E, cocoa butter

Stockists: Tesco stores

Parents' comments:

plus_sign_large.jpg (800 bytes) The spray on applicator is excellent - very quick and easy to get it onto the skin even with an uncooperative child
plus_sign_large.jpg (800 bytes) A very light, non greasy consistency which also helps you rub it in fast
plus_sign_large.jpg (800 bytes) Contains cocoa butter which gives it a really summery smell that reminds me of lazy holidays every time I use it
plus_sign_large.jpg (800 bytes) Superb value - low price to start with plus the spray-on system means you waste very little each application

Sun Zapper

Zinc Stick SPF30

Price: £3.49 for a 12g stick

Score:

Babyworld verdict: Thick sunscreens can be off putting because they are messy but applied through a stick you get all the protection without needing to rub it in and without the usual stickiness

What you get: A flesh coloured zinc stick - rather like a giant lipstick.

Stockists: Boots and supermarkets nationwide

Parents' comments:

plus_sign_large.jpg (800 bytes) We first discovered zinc sticks when we were on holiday in Australia where everyone uses them and they come in many multi-colours - this one is flesh
coloured which is a bit less fun but more subtle and more acceptable to my older children who felt the fluorescent colours were a bit silly

plus_sign_large.jpg (800 bytes) Very quick to apply - you just kind of draw it on and colour in the skin - my daughter actually likes doing it herself - it's not often she is encouraged to
draw all over herself so it has a big novelty value

plus_sign_large.jpg (800 bytes)Covers thickly so you can actually see it is on in all the right places and extremely effective even on very fair skin
Not at all messy for a thickly covering sunscreen - only snag is it is quite hard to wash off should you want to!

Johnson & Johnson

Johnson Suncare Baby Lotion SPF 40

Price: £9.99 for 200ml

Score:

Babyworld verdict: This has a lush feel to it and is easy to use but certainly not the cheapest way to protect your child.

What you get: A bottle with flip top lid and easy flow lotion

Stockists: Boots and supermarkets nationwide

Parents' comments:

plus_sign_large.jpg (800 bytes) Flows effortlessly from the bottle so very easy to get out to apply regularly
plus_sign_large.jpg (800 bytes) Very soft and smooth so you feel it has a gentle, moisturising effect as well as a protecting quality
plus_sign_large.jpg (800 bytes) Smells lovely
plus_minus_signs.jpg (1137 bytes) Expensive but often on offer and so pleasant to apply and yummy to sniff I don't mind paying out!

Avon

Bronze Kids' Waterproof Sun Cream SPF 30

Price: £8 for 200ml currently available online with a buy one get one free offer

Score:

Babyworld verdict: This is a cream you can be sure you have applied all over because of its colour changing feature - the colour also makes applying it more fun for the kids and if they are interested in having it put on, it is is far more likely to be effective!

What you get: A tube of cream which is purple before you rub it in. Avon products also available as lotions, sprays and roll-ons

Stockists: Your local Avon rep or www.avon.co.uk

Parents' comments:

plus_sign_large.jpg (800 bytes) We spend a lot of time in the south of France and sun products are very important to us. We are outside an awful lot and yet my
son has only managed to produce about three freckles on his face so I'd say that makes this cream is pretty effective
plus_sign_large.jpg (800 bytes) We use this cream because it is extremely well priced as they always seem to have half price promotions running
plus_sign_large.jpg (800 bytes) We have never had any problems applying the cream and neither of our children have ever burnt
plus_sign_large.jpg (800 bytes) There is also a version which includes insect repellent which we have also used to great effect too when we needed to beat of mosquitos

Pampers

UV Wipes SPF 30

Price: £6.99 for a pack of 30

Score:

Babyworld verdict: Very convenient and simple to use - kids hardly notice they are having sunscreen applied and relatively no mess

What you get: A pack of babywipes which are impregnated with a SPF 30 sunscreen applied by wiping the child's skin

Stockists: Supermarkets nationwide

Parents' comments:

plus_sign_large.jpg (800 bytes) Brilliant - very quick and easy to apply
plus_sign_large.jpg (800 bytes) Impregnated with quite a thick, white cream which was very effective but would have been quite messy to apply from a tube - in wipe form it
was easy and relatively mess free to apply and even suited my son who has sensitive skin, excema and a cows milk allergy.
plus_sign_large.jpg (800 bytes) Extremely convenient - easy to carry around, never leaked
plus_minus_signs.jpg (1137 bytes) These seem expensive but they did not dry out and one wipe really did cover a whole child so in practise they were
actually pretty cost effective

Garnier Ambre Solaire Kids

Moisturising High Protection Milk SPF25

Price: £2.97 for 200 ml

Score:

Babyworld verdict: This traditional-style suncream is an all-rounder but our mums were confused by its claims to be sand restistant - perhaps a gimmick-too far?!

What you get: A bottle with flip top lid and easy flow moisturising milk including natual extracts and vitamin E

Stockists: 0845 399 0404

Parents' comments:

plus_sign_large.jpg (800 bytes) This milk has a very silky feel and made my own hands feel really soft after applying it to my sons - so I definitely rate it's moisturising qualities
plus_minus_signs.jpg (1137 bytes) It claims it is water and sand resistant - but I'm not sure what sand resistant can mean! Skin does feel lightly greased after use but it did still seem to be
in place after swimming

plus_minus_signs.jpg (1137 bytes) The milk consistency makes this easy to pour out and apply although it sometimes comes out a little too fast!
minus_sign_large.jpg (800 bytes) I wasn't mad keen on the smell as it seemed a bit synethetic and chemical
