Babyworld favourite:

Snugger

We loved the Snugger design and the tog rating (2.2) was just right, meaning parents didn’t have to worry about what baby was wearing underneath or tucking an extra blanket on top.

The design has a zip up the centre (upside down to make it harder for baby to undo!) and you can get it with an elasticated waist if you like it to fit snugly.

The designs range from no less than three different Winnie The Pooh designs to Peter Rabbit, tartan, gingham and teddies.

Best of all there were three different sizes (0-6 months, 6 months to 2 years and 2 years to 3.5 years) so you knew you were getting the right size for your baby, with months of growth in them without swamping a child at the lower end of the size range. Summer Snuggers are also available, with a tog rating of 0.5, but we didn’t test these.

Prices range from £22.95 to £28.95, for the design range, with £2.50 postage and packing for the UK.

Can be machine washed and tumble-dried.

Why we liked this best: The variety of designs and sizes plus the best sleeping testers!

The others we liked:

Blooming Marvellous

This company’s sleeping bags are actually made by the company we liked best, but they are sold under the Blooming Marvellous name.

Designs are more limited as Blooming Marvellous sell hundreds of other goods rather than just specialising in sleeping bags, but the designs they stock are very pretty; two Winnie The Pooh designs and three different colours of gingham

Prices range from £22.99 to £24.99 (£3.95 postage) with tog ratings between 1.7 and 1.9, and size limited to 6 months to 2 years, the most popular size.

Can be machine-washed and tumble-dried.

For more information visit www.bloomingmarvellous.co.uk or call 020 8391 0338 (order line) or 020 8391 4822 (catalogue request)

Why we liked this: Stylish designs and good value for money.

Kuddlekit

These sleeping bags come in four very smart colours, ranging from the Seaside Green our tester tried out to Farmyard Animals, which will have toddlers practising their animal noises!

It was very easy to slip the testing baby into the bag and the baby not only slept well on the first night, but on all the nights following too.

The zip closes down at the bottom of the bag, so it’s hard for little fingers to work out how to open it.

The tog rating is 0.5 and prices range from £25.50 to £29.50 depending on the size, with a free travel bag which is handy for when you stay away from home. Postage varies according to the number of bags you order, from £3.50 for one, to free delivery if you order more than five – why not ask some friends to order with you?

Can be machine-washed and tumble-dried.

For more information visit www.kuddlekit.com or call 01993 813854.

Why we liked this: we love the smart and unusual designs, plus the toddler-proof zip.

Babyworld Candide

The babyworld Candide sleeping bags are made in France and have a beautiful gingham design, in blue and apricot. It’s one of the few that we tested that zip up the side rather than the front, and while most parents felt this made little difference, one mum did say she preferred to be able to slip her baby in from the side, so liked this design best.

The winter version has a tog rating of 4.0, so baby should be very snug with just a sleepsuit underneath on even the coldest nights. Babyworld sells a 3 to 9 month size of the sleeping bag, for £21.99 plus £4.95 postage (although postage is free if you spend over £75 in the store).

You can buy matching bedding too. Can be machine-washed.

For more information click here or call Brenda on 01235 437717.

Why we liked this: At just under £22, it’s perfect to test your baby in to see if they like sleeping bags.

JoJo maman bébé

This company sells two types of bags; pretty checked cotton 3 tog bags and 2.5 tog bags with Pingu, Pooh or yellow gingham patterns (£24.99). We tested the 3 tog bags.

These come in two sizes: 3-7 months (£22.99) and 6 months to 3 years (£23.99). Postage is £3.50

The small bags zip up the side and the larger ones down the centre. Our testing mum did feel the zip on the larger bag was a little high, but as the end of the zip is in the centre of the bag, it shouldn’t catch on the child.

The larger bag has a smart popper which lets you reduce the size for a smaller child but gives you value for money by extending up to three years with just one bag.

Machine washable and has matching bumpers, with the same checked design with bunny rabbits on it. You may have to remove the label at the neck as our tester (2 years) complained it tickled her!

For more information visit www.jojomamanbebe.co.uk or call 020 7924 6844.

Why we liked this: Value for money and pretty too; you’ll get more than two years wear out of just one bag if your child is at the bottom end of the age band.

Perfectly Happy People

Over just a few pages in a catalogue that includes hundreds of other products, Perfectly Happy People manages to pack in a massive choice in sleeping bags, so that if you know what you want, you’ll find what you need here!

There are a couple of different designs, one with a smart elephant design on a yellow background and another called Petit Zoo with a giraffe, elephant and lion. You can buy 1.5 tog for summer and 3 tog for winter, with three sizes, all side-fastening ranging in price between £22.50 and £25), plus an double length bag with a front zip (£27). There’s matching nursery linen too, including a changing mat cover.

Despite reaching 3 tog, the sleeping bags don’t feel bulky at all.

Machine washable.

For more information visit www.phpbaby.com or call 0870 6070545.

Why we liked this: So much choice in style of bag you’re bound to find the right weight and size.

Grobag

Grobag only sells sleeping bags and nightwear, so there is a wide range to choose from in the catalogue – they’re even planning a Bagpuss and a Clangers design in the near future!

They have three basic styles of bag: 2 tog quilted, 1 tog towelling and 0.5 tog summer, which is very, very light just in case warm days turn into cooler nights.

Designs come in sizes 0-9 months, 9-24 months and 2 to 3.5 years and prices range from £22.50 to £26.50 depending on the design, although there are discounts if you buy two. Postage is £3. Some designs have side zips.

Lots of information to help you choose the right sleeping bag is included in the catalogue, plus answers to frequently asked questions.

For more information visit www.grobag.com or call 01548 854444

Why we liked this: A nursery thermometer tucked in with each bag means you’ll always know what to dress baby in – a very thoughtful touch.
