SLEEPING BAGS ON TEST

BABYWORLD members often ask us about baby sleeping bags, so we thought we’d test out some of the best on the market to give you an idea of what’s out there.

When can my baby use a sleeping bag?

Parents tend to think about buying a sleeping bag when their child gets to about five or six months old and becomes more mobile in the cot, kicking off their blankets.

Sleeping bags are very common on the continent, where many children are put in them from birth, but because they are most commonly bought at around six months in the UK our testing panel were mainly aged between six months and a year old, with one two-year-old who has been using a sleeping bag since she was six months.

We do think, from our own testing and experience, that the best time to start a baby with a sleeping bag is between five months and nine months. Once they get a little bigger, if they’re not used to a sleeping bag they can get very cross about being fixed into their bedding.

What are the benefits?

Get your baby into a sleeping bag at the right age and it makes for peaceful nights with no need to go in and tuck them in again on colder evenings!

And one of the best things about a sleeping bag? It makes it harder for baby to climb out of his or her cot so it can sometimes extend the length of time you can use the cot before thinking about a bed!

What should I look for?

Sleeping bags can fasten two ways, a zip down the centre or one down the side, and our testers had no preference, they found both equally easy to get children into, although a zip down the side was slightly preferred for the youngest babies as they can be slid into it sideways.

Look for designs that can be machine-washed and tumble-dried, as it means you can turn them round in a day if baby has any accidents.

We have picked out a favourite, but all the products featured in this test are high quality and come from reliable, trusted sources. The mums who are sleeping bag converts would happily choose any of them for their babies, and we’ve picked out what we think is best about each one as a guide when you are choosing your own.
