Cribs and moses baskets

Buyer's tips

Moses baskets and cribs are for use during your baby's first few months and are designed to provide a small and cosy environment for a newborn. Neither item is an essential buy, but they can make life easier. Moses baskets in particular are very portable and both items fit easily into your own bedroom if this is where you want your baby to sleep during her early days. Transferring your baby into her own bedroom can also be made easier if a moses basket is used, by putting the basket inside the cot gradually to acclimatise your baby to her new environment.

Cribs often come as flat-pack pieces of furniture which have to be assembled. Some come with mattresses, many do not, but these can be bought separately. Some have drape rails so you can attach coordinating drapes to create a hood above the head end of the crib. Bedding is generally all bought separately. Cribs are suitable for a baby up to around six months and should not be used once your baby can sit up, kneel or pull herself into an upright position.

Moses baskets come in a variety of styles, usually complete with mattress and at least a basic linen set. Some have an optional hood and some have added toy features. Choice is often based on fabric preference but be sure to check handles are strongly attached and that the basket has been treated for fire resistance. You are not advised to place a moses basket on the floor and should buy a stand - these are generally sold separately for about £20.
