  Changing bags

What is a changing bag?

A changing bag is a place to keep all your baby’s nappy change needs. It is something you will take out and about with you and will be most useful if it can hold a simple change of baby clothes, any feeding essentials and the odd toy or soother as well as wipes, creams and nappies. It should also include a portable changing mat so you always have something clean and comfy to lie your baby on at change time.

Do I need one?

A specially designed changing bag is not an essential item – you can make do with any bag you already have if you wish. The advantage of the specially designed bags is that they usually have added features designed to make finding the things you need quicker and easier. They also usually include a portable changing mat so you can create a changing area wherever you happen to be.

What to look for

The most useful changing bags are those that help you to organise yourself but they also need to be easy to open and comfy to carry. Consider the range of features – some have insulated bottle cases or storage pockets, soother and toy holders. Some have ‘mess’ bags or pockets where you can safely store dirty items.

Changing bags may be either in a backpack or shoulder bag style. Consider your own lifestyle and dress style before choosing and remember that if you want your partner to use the bag as often as you do, you should choose something unisex which won’t be an embarrassment for him to carry. Shoulder bags can be stylish but backpacks may be more practical if you walk a lot or need to keep your hands free.

All changing bags should come with a fold-up changing mat – consider the size, padding, fabric and quality – some are machine-washable, others are wipe-clean. Remember, a deep bag may hold lots but it may be hard to find the specific item you want if it gets lost at the bottom. Bags with mesh or see-through pockets and light interiors help you spot the items you need more easily.
