Babyworld's big test

Welcome to babyworld's second 'big test' where we pass the power to our fantastic, product-savvy parent panel. Our monthly big test is an essential piece of reading for anyone thinking of buying new products for baby as it's compiled by the people that know best - other parents just like you. We are constantly on the look out for people to provide honest, no-nonsense and trust-worthy advice that our community can rely on when making a purchase, so if you want to be involved, sign up now and become a parent panel member.

This month the focus is on beach pods and our August panel is a group of air stewardesses who have babies between the ages of 9-15 months. They live in Isleworth, Middlesex and meet up as often as possible to share tips and advice, enjoy fun and games with the babies and test out lots of new products!

All about beach pods

If you're taking your baby on holiday this summer, then a beach pod is a pretty essential piece of kit. Not only are the majority of them easy to pack and fun to use, but they also provide a protective home for your child whilst playing outdoors - whether its on the beach, at the park or simply lazing in the back garden.

Beach pods have a multitude of uses - they provide additional sun protection and are perfect for afternoon naps and feeds, they are also good for encouraging role-playing games for older children who are likely to turn it into a sleepover-friendly play den that they can share with friends.

There are a surprisingly large number of beach pods on the market - all with varying features and accessories. The more elaborate options are designed with the whole family in mind and tend to be equipped with additional extras like play mats, storage pockets and mosquito netting - great if you travel a lot and plan to use it regularly. The more basic options are made with lighter fabrics and tend to pop-up and fold down to the size of a dinner plate. Obviously sun protection is a key factor with beach tents so check that they provide a good barrier from damaging UV rays before buying.

What we tested for

Our parent panel looked at five different pods on the market, testing them in each others gardens, at the beach and in their local park. Our mums gave the 'babyworld best buy' award to the Prince Lionheart Pop n Play Cabana, but you may find the other beach pods scored better in other categories. To ensure you get the right product for you, make sure you read the Test Overview so you can see how they compared.
