Umbrella folding buggy
What is it?
A lightweight, quick to fold, go-anywhere pushchair, so called because it folds up into
a long thin shape rather like an umbrella. Basic models may be rather spartan but buggies
now come in lots of different styles and may include the facility to carry some shopping.
Those which automatically lock as they close and are freestanding when folded are the most
convenient.
Is it for me?
- Some buggies are suitable for newborn babies; they need to recline to a full lie-flat
position and must have a range of accessories to make a snug, cosy cocoon for your baby
- They are the most economical of pushchairs. However, the cheapest models are usually
only suitable for babies from 6 months
- Buggies are brilliant for loading into the back of the car, getting on the bus or train,
nipping in and out of shops, going for short walks, taking on holiday
- They are not designed to carry heavy loads of shopping; those with shopping baskets will
only take a few things and many dont have the facility to take shopping at all.
Hanging bags over the handles is unwise as it may tip the buggy over, harming your baby or
damaging the buggy
- The minimal suspension, lack of support and small wheels, particularly in the most basic
models, can give a bumpy and uncomfortable ride, which makes them unsuitable for young
babies
