Buying secondhand
As with all equipment for your baby, if you are thinking of buying secondhand, you need
to choose carefully and find out the history of the item before you buy.
Points to look for
- Has it got an instruction leaflet?
- Does it have a five-point safety harness which goes over the shoulders, round the middle
and between the legs? If the pushchair you are thinking of buying doesnt have one,
you will need to buy a new harness and ensure that it can be fixed by the D
shaped rings at the base of the pushchair seat. Dont buy a pushchair or pram that
doesnt have fixing points for a harness
- If the frame feels stiff when folding it may have become distorted
- Pushchairs and prams are now designed with two separate locking devices to stop them
from folding accidentally. Check that the model you are buying has these devices and that
they are working properly
- Worn bearings cause wheel wobble; it is possible to replace bearings but it could be
expensive
- Brakes should conform to stringent safety regulations, but they can become less
effective over time
- You may not be able to buy new accessories for an old model
