Your home medicine cabinet
Most of us have a medicine cupboard in our home, containing an assortment of remedies
bought over the counter at our local chemist, for family ailments. But a baby needs
different medication from the rest of the family and should not be given medicines
designed for adults, or even older children.
It is worth keeping some basic baby medicines on hand, as babies can get very
distressed over minor conditions like heat rash, a blocked nose or a sore gum. Your
pharmacist can advise which medication is suitable for your baby.
As babies are unable to swallow tablets, their medication comes in the form of a thick
liquid suspension, usually brightly-coloured and with a fruity taste to make it more
appealing. Concern about tooth decay and the recent links between additives and
behavioural problems, mean that many infant medicines are now sugar and additive free.
It's worth asking about the sugar content before you buy.
Sometimes prompt treatment at home is all that is needed for minor ailments. If the
condition does not improve over a few days consult your doctor. Remember that under twos
can become ill very quickly, so if something that seemed to be minor gets much worse very
quickly, contact your doctor.
