Nursing bras

If you are planning to breastfeed your baby, a nursing bra is an essential item. Designed to make feeding your baby a discreet and comfortable activity, they have drop-down cups to allow easy access to the breast. We've compiled this 'how to choose' guide to help you find the right bra...

The best time to buy your feeding bra is towards the end of your pregnancy when your bust size has fully developed and the best way to ensure a good fit is to be advised and measured by a professional - most high street stores will have a fitting expert. There is plenty of choice, but facts and features to carefully consider include:

  • Fabric - cotton adds comfort, elastane adds support and give.
  • Support - even small breasts become heavy during feeding and need good support to maintain their shape post-feeding. Consider cup design, support bands under the breast and the cut under the arms.
  • Drop-cup mechanisms - these may include zips, hook and eyes, poppers and specially designed clips - check them out and remember you ideally want to be able to undo and resecure with one hand.
  • Comfort - think carefully about any part of a bra that could become uncomfortable - wide shoulder straps and sports style backs can help spread the weight of the breasts across your back. Plenty of back strap positions will help ensure the under band doesn't dig in.
  • Appearance - even when you are feeding you still want to look and feel good about yourself, so shop around for a style that suits your self image. Some people like the traditional armour-plating style of the most supportive bras because they can instill confidence but if that isn't your style there are plenty of other options, many of which are sporty, sexy or fun.
