Front carriers

These are good for carrying a small baby close to you. You may find them useful for short shopping trips, around the house when you want to get on with chores, or if your baby won’t settle. They are suitable from birth onwards as long as they support your baby’s head, neck and back, and can be used until you find the weight is too much of a strain on your back.

Points to look for

  • Good support for the baby’s head, neck and back. Can you adjust the support to suit your baby’s size?
  • Well padded leg holes
  • For you, wide, well padded shoulder straps and back straps. This will help to distribute the weight, and the straps are less likely to dig in
  • Is it easy to put on, adjust and put the baby into? Can you do this without help from someone else?
  • Is it machine washable? This is a bonus, otherwise it should be wipe clean. It may also come with a detachable soft piece of cloth where your baby rests his head on your chest, to help keep you clean
  • Some front carriers adjust for the baby to face the parent in the early weeks and then, while still worn on your front, turn to face the world. Babies enjoy being able to watch where they are going while having you close
  • Some carriers allow you to carry the baby in a cradle position, on the hip, or even adjust to become back carriers
