Infertility

Infertility the last secret
Anna McGrail
Bloomsbury, paperback, 352 pages, £14.99

This book is authoritative and comprehensively written, and gives an insight into:

  • why you may not be conceiving
  • what the tests are for and what they feel like
  • what medical treatments involve
  • the emotional stresses and valuable sources of support
  • alternative ways of creating a family such as adoption and surrogacy
  • what happens if you do have a baby
  • what happens of you don’t.

Scientific advances of recent years offer hope to many but their benefits have to be weighed against the physical emotional and financial cost and uncertainties. This book is the perfect blend of facts and figures combined with the experiences of couples, providing you with the help you need to make informed choices at every stage of your quest for a baby.

Recommended for those who know they have a fertility problem, those who are embarking on fertility investigations and or treatments and those couples who would like to know what is possible and what to expect with regard to how you will feel or what the success rates are. We particularly liked the fact that the book ends with the chapters ‘what happens if you do have a baby’ and also ‘what happens if you don’t’ so that every eventuality is covered in a compassionate manor. The book also has an excellent section with support organisations, Internet resources, and further reading.

Alternative Infertility Treatments
Nicky Wesson
Vintage/Ebury, paperback, 192 pages, £8.99

One in six couples experience infertility. Many of these opt for IVF, which is expensive, risky and has a success rate of only 14 per cent. Few are aware of the scope, efficacy, safety and comparative value that alternative treatments can provide.

Illustrated throughout with case histories and thoroughly researched, Alternative Infertility Treatments list the hazards of conventional treatments and outlines ways in which you can improve your fertility through diet, exercise and relaxation techniques. It also describes ways to detect ovulation and maximise the opportunities of conception.

The book covers the philosophies behind such therapies as acupuncture, reflexology, homeopathy, cranial osteopathy and herbalism. It enables you to choose the most appropriate one for you and gives examples of how each one has helped couples overcome both primary and secondary infertility in order to have the baby they wanted.

Not an expensive book and well worth a read, particularly good for those who are reluctant to go down the normal medical route with fertility drugs and IVF. The reader is left with the feeling that there was no real right or wrong therapy to go for and in a way there was not much guidance. But the success stories were very encouraging and the treatments outlined in the book would be worth trying when faced with the other conventional treatments available.
