Birth to six months

The benefits

From as early as one month old, your baby can smile in response to your smile. From two months she is beginning to recognise your voice and respond to it, and by five months she can reach for a book, see the different colours and enjoy varied sounds and textures.

The first books you buy should be simple, bright and colourful, and also made to withstand plenty of enthusiastic handling. Your baby will want to explore the texture of the book as well as the pictures in it, by touching, feeling and even attempting to chew it!

As well as letting your baby hold and handle the book as much as he wants, you can also look at the pictures, point things out and talk about them. First baby books will have few or no words and simple pictures.

At this stage your baby will be learning to recognise familiar objects and matching them to the words you are saying.

What to look for:

  • Sturdy board books
  • Soft cloth books
  • Books with different textures or noises to explore
  • Wipe-clean books
  • Waterproof books for the bath
  • Books with photographs or drawings of familiar objects
  • Books with photographs or drawings of babies
