Gifts for the motherThere are no set rules for gifts for the mother - though the French have a tradition where the husband presents his wife with a diamond upon the birth of his first child! Flowers are perhaps the most traditional gift to send and there are many companies who now offer a delivery service including the major British supermarkets. Pink flowers are traditional for a baby girl and many people ask for the inclusion of gypsophila - otherwise known as 'baby's breath'. Chocolates are a popular gift and again there are many companies who offer a delivery service. Some companies produce chocolate letters, so you could send the name of the baby instead of the more traditional box of chocolates. Balloons and champagne by post can also be personalised with the name and date of the baby's arrival. The classified advertisements in the back of consumer magazines are often good places to look for companies offering these services. Baby record books and photo albums come in many different styles and designs. These can be very sumptuous - covered in silk or velvet, or covered in plain calico cotton adorned with perhaps a pram or bow motif fashioned in wire. For the christening, a baby record book or photo album can be covered in fabric to match the baby's gown. Silver photo frames are another traditional gift. Or you can choose a more modern design in plain brushed metal, matt ceramic or pale wood, or even a frame designed as a teddy or a pair of baby booties.
