Constant cravings

Everyone jokes about the cravings pregnant women have. We asked our antenatal group editors what they can't do without in the middle of the night … Going gaga over olives

The cravings I had, before actually getting the BFP, were olives, olives and more olives! Jason said he actually looked in my lunch box the day before we found out we were expecting and nearly threw up, as it contained tuna, olives, jalapeno peppers, beetroot and more olives!

I'd say, through to week 12, it was more bland stuff: plain crisps (once ate five packets on the trot), mashed potato, cheese and Pot Noodles. Oh, and fizzy orange pop. I once made Jason get up out of bed in the middle of the night to open a can, put it in a pint glass with loads of ice cubes - it had to be a pint glass and it had to have ice cubes! I was tapping my fingers on the bedside cabinet waiting for him to come back upstairs.

Loving liquorice

My bizarre craving was liquorice! A few weeks back, I was sat watching a bit of telly and all of a sudden my mouth started salivating and felt, well, how can I say it, weird. The only thing I could think about was liquorice!

Thankfully, lovely hubbie went to the corner shop and got a bag of Bassetts Allsorts and I crammed the plain black ones in my mouth. Within seconds, I felt satisfied and my mouth felt back to normal. We both thought this was really bizarre as, although I have a sweet tooth, there's no way I would ever choose a bag of Allsorts. In fact, I'd probably munch the pink and blue coconut ones and bin the liquorice centre!

Cornflakes and haddock fish fingers…

Welcome to the weird world of my eating habits ...

  • Cornflakes... Cornflakes and more cornflakes - I have lost count of how many Kellogg's toys I have collected without meaning to!
  • Haddock fish fingers ... I once drove ten miles to the nearest big supermarket rather than risk them not having the right ones in the village shop. Unfortunately, I then forgot most of the other things I needed in order to get home and have a fish finger sarnie.
  • Anything with milk in it, especially yoghurt - I eat gallons of the stuff!
  • Gherkins - I drove to a McDonald's Drive-Thru, desperate for a Quarter-pounder with cheese, late one night only to sit in the car and pick the gherkins out to eat on their own! I then drove home and fed the burger to the dog!
  • Ice cream, especially Soleros … mmmm …
  • Thai sweet chilli sauce on everything! Especially cold cooked chicken and cheese rolls warmed in the microwave.
  • Liquorice Allsorts - but only Bassetts will do.
  • Ben and Jerry's Cherry Garcia Ice Cream - but I think that is my husband's rather than mine, though I am more than happy to go along with it!

The stuff I miss most are: blue cheese (I live down the road from Colston Bassett - the home of Stilton - purgatory!); paté; rare steak and proper beer!

Taken with tangerines

I craved tangerines for the first 12 weeks. I got through two or three of those big nets a week at least. I also craved fizzy sweets like Haribo Tangfastics and fizzy cola bottles as I found they stopped me feeling sick. I tried not to eat too many though!!

Rollmops and marmite on toast!

My weirdest from a previous pregnancy was rollmops AND marmite on toast! In each of my three pregnancies, I've craved cured herrings in soured cream. Other than that, salt and vinegar french fries, damson jam on toast (at 3am!) and tinned grapefruit. At the moment, it's Mars bars!

Get out the Irn Bru!

Well, the things I have craved during pregancy are: chips, spicy food, salt on everything, ice cream, pickles, jelly, sweets and Irn Bru. I have completely gone off chocolate and many other things I used to enjoy.
