So spa so good

"I have never had a professional massage at all before and, now that I have, I would thoroughly recommend it to any expectant mum out there - just for a boost. It'll make you feel human again!"

I am: Jo (pictured right), 34 from Newport, Gwent. I am 27 weeks pregnant with her second child.

I went to: Fusion Spa and Wellness At Bryn Meadows Golf Club & Spa, Caerphilly

I had: Espa Pre/Post Natal Treatment

My day: I arrived at Bryn Meadows not knowing what to expect. I didn't exactly feel at my most confident being seven months pregnant and, to be honest, didn't relish the idea of stripping off! After booking in at reception I was handed a fluffy robe and slippers and was directed to the changing room. It all looked fantastic - very contemporary. There were plenty of lockers, a hairdryer and showers. It also led to the swimming pool, which looked lovely. What a shame I didn't bring my cozzie! I was then directed to the Relaxation Room. Wow! Dimmed lighting, a water feature, two recliners if you wanted to lie down or 2 seats. As gentle and relaxing music played, I was left to fill out my consultation form and just relax.

My therapist, Cassie, met me there and I felt totally at ease. She was very friendly and couldn't do enough to make sure I was comfortable. She led me to the treatment room, which had more subdued lighting and relaxing music, and she explained exactly what my treatment would consist of. All the Espa products used were 100 per cent natural and completely safe to use during pregnancy. They smelled divine.

I took off my bra and sat on the edge of the treatment 'bench' with my feet on a stool. For my back treatment I leaned forward into a pillow and enjoyed the exfoliation treatment, which consisted of Body Smoothing shower gel being rubbed into my back, and later removed using a hot towel. This was followed by Deeply Nourishing Body Cream and to finish with a gorgeous massage using Nourishing Body Oil (a simple blend of sweet almond oil and grapeseed oil). It was so comfortable that I was nearly asleep by the time she had finished!

Cassie then told me to recline on the 'bench' and I was completely covered with a long, fluffy towel. I know I have enough indignities to look forward to with childbirth, so it shouldn't have worried me, but being totally covered was reassuring! She checked that I was comfortable and offered extra pillows to go under my knees, but I was fine. There was always drinking water on offer and I could have popped to the loo at any time during the treatment, but my bladder held! The same treatment was given to my legs, arms and chest/neck area. I felt like I'd escaped from the real world for a moment, I was so relaxed and all my aches and pains had gone.

A scalp massage using Pink Hair and Scalp Mud completed the treatment. Cassie warned me that it would need washing afterwards but that was fine. I was in such a relaxed state I really didn't care!

The 90-minute treatment flew by and my skin felt beautiful afterwards. I have never had a professional massage at all before and, now that I have, I would thoroughly recommend it to any expectant mum out there - just for a boost. It'll make you feel human again!

This golf club/hotel and spa is located conveniently off the A472 dual carriageway, between Newbridge and Ystrad Mynach, and has fantastic views of the surrounding countryside. It has a stunning interior and an impressive restaurant menu. They even do one night spa breaks, which is a must for getting your other half involved too.

Treatments: This total body treatment has been carefully designed for those who are expecting or have just had a baby. Taking account of all contra-indications, this treatment avoids the use of essential oils and is a luxurious treat using a Calenda infused oil, Pink Clay Mud and various nourishing creams with advanced massage techniques to safe areas. This treatment improves the tonicity and comfort of the skin and creates a sense of total relaxation.

Cost: £60

Verdict: Absolutely amazing. I was treated like royalty and felt wonderful afterwards. I'd recommend it to every pregnant woman!

The spa test: 5/5
