I am: Jody Middleton, 26, from London,
24 weeks pregnant
I went to: I stayed at home as the therapist
comes to you!
I had: a Return
to Glory Hydrotherm pregnancy massage
My day: I will start from the beginning
- the booking of my massage was 100% easy. I was given plenty of information
about both types of pregnancy massage and was recommended the hydrotherm
one by one of the therapists. I was then sent an email confirmation with
all the details and the name of my therapist. I then got a phone call
the day before and a text message on the day to confirm!
The therapist comes to your home which I have to say is
wonderful. The appointment was at 7pm for 2 hours including 20 minutes
set up.
My therapist, Susan, arrived at 6.55 with her table and
hydrotherm equipment and got set up straight away. I've never had a massage
at home before so I wasn't sure what the procedure was so I just kept
out of the way while she did her thing.
Then the massage began! I had to strip down to just my knickers
and get myself on the table (which was no mean feat….) and lie on the
lovely warm water bed. The bed was arranged so that my knees were bent
but I was lying flat. My spine was kept straight by having a block under
my head. It was wonderfully comfortable. I had to use two towels to cover
myself up.
It was at this point I congratulated myself for rushing home from work
and shaving my legs as, if I hadn't, the poor woman would have surely
received nasty friction burns!
She first asked me to smell 2 Aveda essential oils (pregnancy safe ones)
and asked me which one I preferred - I went for 'calm' over 'energising'.
She then warmed the oil in her hands and went to work on my right leg.
It was an absolutely wonderful feeling (I've never had a full body massage
before) and I could feel my circulation being boosted as she pummelled
me. To be honest, I was expecting a very light massage as I know people
worry around pregnant ladies but she used a very firm pressure which I
definitely needed. I do a lot of walking and used to run a lot before
I got too big so my legs need a bit of attention now and again.
I closed my eyes and drifted off for a while but then realised she'd
been working on my right leg for ages!
Eventually she moved on to my left leg, my arms and my stomach. She obviously
lightened the pressure over my stomach but to be honest I'm not a fan
of anyone (especially people I don't know) touching my pregnant stomach
so I didn't enjoy that part so much. I also felt very exposed as she had
to split the towels to one over my boobs and one over my bottom half -
I just didn't feel comfortable being that exposed.
She then moved to my chest (above the boobs I hasten to add!) and somehow
managed to get her hands underneath me to get to my back. The back part
I enjoyed but she then moved to the back of my neck and round to my face
which I simply didn't enjoy. I would have liked to have been told that
I was going to have oil all over my face and hair line as it just made
me feel greasy and it made my hair very greasy. I didn't feel like having
a shower after being so relaxed so today I have greasy hair which is quite
annoying.
The massage eventually finished at 9pm which, although I really enjoyed
the massage, was quite a relief.
Anyway, to conclude, I really enjoyed the massage and my therapist was
absolutely lovely but the down points, in my view, are that it was too
long (1h 45 mins is too long for me to be lying still) and I didn't like
my stomach being exposed. I'm sure though that lots of people wouldn't
mind that at all. Considering many people pay around £60 for a 30 minute
back massage in a spa, I didn't think £90 bad at all considering that
the therapist comes to your house and the massage is 1h 45 mins long.
So if you're someone who enjoys massages and doesn't get agitated at
having to lie still for a long time, I would say go for it!
Treatments:A wide range of beauty and massage
treatments are available for mums-to-be.
Cost: £90
Verdict: I think the fact that this
is a home service is wonderful especially for women further along in pregnancy
than me as it's lovely after a 2 hour massage in the evening not to have
to worry about getting home and re-stressing after such relaxation. I
loved my treatment but would have preferred not to have my neck and face
massaged. But this hasn't put me of using their other home services.
The spa test: 4/5
