Vitamins & pre eclampsia

Research published in 1999 suggested that high doses of vitamin C and vitamin E may help reduce the incidence of pre-eclampsia in women at high risk of developing the illness.

Although this seems encouraging news, most experts remain unconvinced. First, the study was very small (only 160 women completed the study) so the results may not be accurate (a larger trial is being planned). Secondly, there is some doubt over the safety of the massive doses required of the two vitamins.

If you are particularly at risk of pre eclampsia, you may like to discuss this study with your obstetrician. For most women, however, the message remains: eat a full and balanced diet with plenty of fruit and vegetables.
