Medicines
While there are, in fact, very few over the counter or prescription drugs which are
definitely known to be harmful to unborn babies, it is wise to be cautious during
pregnancy.
Remember that anything you take by mouth, put on your skin, breathe in or inject may
either pass through to your baby or change the way your body works and possibly cause harm
to your baby. This includes nutritional supplements and alternative treatments like herbal
preparations, massage and aromatherapy oils and homeopathic remedies.
Always ask for advice from a pharmacist or doctor. Say clearly I am pregnant (or
planning to get pregnant); is this safe for me? before you:
- Accept any prescription from a doctor, dentist or alternative practitioner
- Agree to any dental or medical treatment
- Buy any medicines for yourself in a chemists shop or supermarket
- Use any herbal medicines or tablets (consult a qualified herbalist)
- Use any homeopathic remedies, aromatherapy preparations or massage oils (consult a
qualified practitioner)
Of course, there will be times when your doctor decides that taking a medicine is, on
balance, better for you and your baby than not taking it: for example to prevent an
epileptic fit, or to treat a serious infection.
