Supporting your partner during pregnancy

Although as a future dad or partner you might feel somewhat removed from the whole process, there are many ways in which you can support your partner during pregnancy.

  • You can give her a longer-term view of the whole process. This might be difficult for her to achieve by herself, for example if she isn’t feeling well
  • If your partner has a scan booked, attend with her. It can help you both relate to the baby
  • Attend antenatal classes together
  • Be well informed so you share the learning process and the worries
  • If your partner is working full time or if there are other children to look after, you could take over more of the household chores
  • Help when she most needs it. If morning sickness is a problem, take over tasks early in the day. If she has backache in the evenings learn how to massage her back
  • Talk together; it’s important in any relationship but vital during pregnancy. Talk about your hopes and dreams and your worries together
