Fantastic days out
Entertaining the little ones can seem daunting but with our guide
to ten top attractions, as chosen by babyworlders you can rest
assured that you'll all have a fab time!
'Going crazy at Warwick Castle'
'Last
Christmas holidays we went to Warwick Castle for the day and had a fab
time. It was very expensive to get into - the only big downside - but
at least we had a good day out.
Our daughter was fascinated by the waxwork figures inside the castle
and had fun posing for photos in the stocks! The castle itself is amazing
to look at (the views from the top are incredible) and the grounds are
beautiful to walk through, especially down by the river.
You can buy food in the cafe, which is quite expensive, or take a picnic
and eat it in the grounds. If you book online you can get a discount so
it's probably worthwhile doing so especially if there's a special event
going on.'
Sam, mum to Angelina (4)

Easter fun: From 25 March till 6 April, the Castle will be transforming
itself into a storybook world, with princesses and knights in attendance,
where children can decide the ending! www.warwick-castle.co.uk
'Trees please us'
'Westonbirt is the country's National Arboretum and has one of the most
wonderful collection of trees in the world: over 3,000 in fact! It's beautiful
at all times of the year and my son loves running around amongst the trees
and pretending they are secret Robin Hood dens!
The Arboretum often has loads of events on throughout the year, especially
for children, and we find it's a fantastic place to forget about the strains
of modern life - it's so peaceful and quiet.
We happily spend an afternoon following one of the activity trails that
the arboretum provides, taking a picnic along with us on the way!'
Stephanie, mum to Joseph (4)

Easter fun: Westonbirt is holding a special Easter Challenge on Good
Friday. Children can follow a trail of clues around the arboretum and
make their own Easter decorations before receiving a sweet reward.
There will also be an Easter egg hunt from Saturday to Easter Monday,
where children spot all the eggs around the arboretum and try to guess
which animals laid them. www.forestry.gov.uk/westonbirt
'A great park for a 30th birthday!'
'I think the nature centre in Cannon Hill Park, Birmingham, has to be
the best I've found yet. It is really cheap to get into, has a good variety
of animals, such as wallabies and a petting farm, AND free parking and
access to the rest of the Park, with its lake and arts centre.
We thoroughly enjoyed our visit there recently; with the low-cost entry
we could afford to have a nibble in the café and ice creams too and we
stayed for the entire day whilst the kids ran riot and wore themselves
out!
We're going again this weekend for my 30th birthday with all the family
and friends!' Jeni, mum to Oscar (19 months)

'Seeing baby birds makes a lovely day out'
'My children really love nature so we often visit our local Wildlife
and Wetland Trust (WWT) at Arundel. It's wonderful to see so many different
birds and to also know that our visit is helping to raise money for their
protection.
In the Spring, the WWTs hold special events called 'Downy Ducklings'
tours, where visitors can take a special 'behind-the-scenes' tour of their
waterfowl nurseries and see eggs in incubators. Last year, we saw ducklings,
goslings, cygnets and lots of other baby birds, which really made us feel
spring-like!'
Laura, mum to Lesley (1) and Leo (3)

'It was a blooming marvellous garden centre!'
'Our son Morgan is only 15 weeks old so his best family day out so far
has to be Blooms! It's a garden centre with a play area for children of
all ages. Costs are based on age so it's free for my baby until he is
six months old. It has a soft play area with lots of things to do, even
for the babies!
They can lie on the floor and look at all the brightly coloured things
or sit in a baby walker if they can hold their heads up. He loved it when
we took him.'

'The Science Museum is out of this world!'
'My top recommendation is the Science Museum in London. It's got something
to interest all ages. In the basement, they have a huge area where children
can play and learn at the same time. There are all sorts of fun experiments
that they can take part in, and loads of things that they are actively
encouraged to touch, and try to play with.
The exhibits themselves are really interesting too. My son was particularly
excited about the transport area, which contains full-sized cars, steam
engines, models of space shuttles, full-size airplanes etc. Entry to the
museum is free, although you are invited to leave a donation.
There are usually certain exhibits on that you do have to pay entry
to and whilst these are often great there is plenty to do there to have
a really good day without paying for the extras. Oh and there is also
a 3D IMAX cinema there although again this has a separate entry fee.
'There are a couple of different places to buy food within the museum
although we found them to be very expensive. However there is an area
set aside for you to eat your own picnic so I would recommend going with
that option.
There are plenty of toilets/baby-changing facilities and also lifts giving
disabled/buggy access. It's really a great day out!' Rhea, mum to Conor
(4) and a tiny toddler (1)!

'Trust the National Trust for a good time'
'For me the best days out are at National Trust places. We have an annual
family membership that is paid for by a family member as a Christmas present.
We have a National Trust place near us called Arlington Court and it is
a real haven.
It has a big lawn in front of the house were we play Frisbee and stuff,
and eat our picnics. It also has a big lake where we go paddling. I always
find that I come away from those summer days at Arlington Court feeling
stress-free and relaxed, and the kids come away happy as they have been
able to run around and play all day. 'National Trust membership is a fantastic
thing for days out as once you have paid the annual membership that is
it and there are places all over the country. They also run activity days
throughout the year.
We have been to lots of them including a circus workshop, music workshop
and we had a high tea at Christmas in the house at Arlington Court, where
Father Christmas attended.'

'It's fun on the farm!'
'I love Farmer Palmers in Dorset. Whenever we go we spend the whole day
there. The children feed the lambs, hold guinea pigs and groom ponies;
there is so much to do and it isn't too expensive. They now have a soft
play area that is next to the café so the kids can have a run around after
lunch. 'There is plenty of space outside to eat if you take a picnic or
the café is reasonably priced.
They have a tractor ride which the kids love, although I have never been
on it because every time we go I am heavily pregnant!
There is a large play area outside that has a water spray in the summer
and go karts - the pedal type for adults and children. You can watch them
milk a cow and listen to a talk all about it, there is loads to do and
it is a great day out.'

'My daughter loves this world of adventure'
'My daughter loves visiting Crealy Adventure Park in Devon. The only
time we have ever seen her totally exhausted is after a day there!
There's a good selection of rides to go on for all ages, including a
carousel, a pirate boat, a log flume ride and a small rollercoaster, as
well as a fantastic adventure playground to run around in and climb. Additionally,
the park is home to many animals, including ponies (which offer short
rides), rabbits, guinea pigs, ducks and pygmy goats.
If you like nature and walking, there is a beautiful walk around the
park and crazy bridges to cross the stream running along the outside.
Little ones love the miniature village, especially running in and out
of the buildings! It it's raining, there is a massive soft play area that
you can let your child run wild in. 'Food can be expensive and rather
limited - the usual chips and burgers stuff.
However, if you take a picnic you can enjoy eating it at one of the
many picnic tables dotted around the site. In the summer, in good weather,
it can get hot and there's not a lot of shade, so remember to take sunhats
and plenty of sun lotion.'

'A palace fit for a family' '
At weekends and holidays we often visit Blenheim Palace in Oxfordshire
for a good day out. The Palace is pretty amazing but perhaps more for
the adults than for little ones. However, the grounds are fantastic. Designed
by Capability Brown in the 1760s, there are miles of beautiful scenery
to stroll through and explore, including a wonderful lake which is a popular
setting for family picnics!
The Pleasure Gardens are especially suitable for children, with loads
of butterflies to look at, the Marlborough Maze to get lost in (it's the
second largest symbolic hedge maze in the world apparently!) and a miniature
diesel train to ride on, linking the Palace with the Garden. 'You can
buy a range of food at the Palace or take a picnic - whichever you prefer.
There are a couple of cafes plus an ice cream shop and they use local
produce wherever possible. Tickets for entry are quite pricey but you
can choose to either go the whole hog and visit everything or you can
just visit the gardens and parkland.
If you really want to push the boat out, you can pre-order a deluxe
picnic hamper for two (either a lunch or a tea one) that will probably
be enough for a small family to enjoy.'
Karen, mum to Jacob (3) and Lucy (6)

From 21-24 March, the Palace will be running a variety of Easter-related
activities, from their Easter Egg Challenge in the Pleasure Gardens to
Punch and Judy shows, face painting, story telling and pottery designing!
