Child Tax Credit
New baby? You could be entitled to additional money
Congratulations
on your new arrival. Did you realise that this addition to your family
could entitle you to claim Child Tax Credit, in addition to Child Benefit?
If not, then read on to find out how much money you could get. The extra
income will be paid directly to the person who is mainly responsible for
looking after your new child.
If you are already claiming Child Tax Credit, then the information below
will show you how much more money your family could be entitled to - see
the chart below.
Am I eligible?
- You are entitled to Child Tax Credit if your income (or if you have
a partner, your joint income) is less than £58,000 a year (£66,000
if there is at least one child who is less than a year old)
- You may be entitled to extra money in the first year of your child's
life for childcare costs
- If you are already claiming tax credits for one child, a second child
means that you could be entitled to more money
- If you are working you may be eligible for Working Tax Credit, including
help with childcare costs
- Already claiming Income Support or Income-Based Jobseeker's Allowance?
Then you don't need to do anything now - we will pay all the money owed
to you through your income support or income-based Jobseeker's Allowance.
Already receiving tax credits
If you are already receiving tax credits, HM Revenue and Customs have
calculated the amount from the details you gave them about your family
and household income. So if any of your details change, the amount of
money you're entitled to may change too - you could get even more. That's
why it's very important that you let them know immediately your new baby
arrives or if anything else changes. Don't miss out, make sure you claim
what you're entitled to by phoning 0845
300 3900 If you live in Great Britain or 0845
603 2000 If you live in Northern Ireland.
Jill
and Michael Skinner have been married now for ten years and have one
child. Now Jill is pregnant with their second child and wants to become
a full-time mum. The Skinners are already receiving Child Tax Credit
and they assumed that, with Michael earning £25,000 a year they
wouldn't be entitled to anything further. They were delighted to discover
they will receive an additional £755 for the first year of the
baby's life. |
