Essential information
babyworld is packed with essential information to help you conceive, so we thought we’d highlight it here, along with some of the latest statistics.*
This year, there are 12 million women classed as being of fertile age in the UK, that’s 12 million women between 15 and 45 years (yes we do know you can have a baby later than that!)
At any time, up to 4% of women in each age group are trying to get pregnant:
- Around one per cent of women aged 20 to 24 are trying to get pregnant and two percent are pregnant
- Around two percent of women aged between 25 and 29 are trying to get pregnant and four per cent are pregnant
- Around four per cent of women aged between 30 and 34 years are trying to get pregnant and another four per cent are pregnant
- Three per cent of women aged 35-39 years are trying to get pregnant and one per cent are pregnant.
- Between 40 and 44 years, one per cent are trying to get pregnant and less than one per cent are pregnant.
What do you do if you are having trouble conceiving?
If you have been trying to conceive for over a year but have been having regular unprotected sex, your doctor will probably refer you for tests. So what happens then?
What tests might I have to undergo?
Your hormones will probably be checked, along with an analysis of your partner’s sperm. Other tests include a post-coital test, or other, more physical investigations. Find out more about fertility tests.
Getting your body fit
Getting your body fit to conceive can help people who don’t have an actual fertility problem. Thinking about weight, stress and other issues can all have an effect.
What causes infertility and what do I do next?
You may have a problem with ovulation or your partner may have a problem with sperm production, among other issues. Have a look at some possible causes and find out what to do next if this might be the reason why you are not conceiving.
Which infertility treatment will I need?
There are a wide range of infertility treatments, so read all about them and be clued up when your doctor starts talking about them.
Any more information?
Babyworld ran a feature earlier this year on fertility, looking at different aspects of infertility and talking to one babyworld dad, Tony Cullum, who is now the proud father of twins created using ICSI treatment. Read Tony’s story or check out the whole feature.
