Baby books: 12 - 18 months
Soft Shapes Counting/Shapes, illustrated by Bob Filipowich
These soft, bendy books made from non-toxic foam feature press-out pieces
that float in the bath, giving you the opportunity to introduce concepts in a playful way.
As with all novelties, two burning questions are: How long will it last? Is it messy to
store? Because the foam is bendy but firm, it withstands lots of handling. And the pieces
press in easily again at the end of play because of the pliability of the material.
Counting has different kinds of fishes numbering up to four, while the Shapes
title features challenges like: Find the orange circle (which is a big press-out sun).
There are also some mini-books in the series that are all about animals and the sounds
they make, where the sounds appear under the press-outs.
Published by Tango Books, £4.99 for the larger books, £3.99 for the minis.
Old Bear, by Jane Hissey
This story is becoming a classic, and deserves a mention. The
tale of how Old Bear is rescued from the attic by his toy friends is well-crafted and
really involving for child and parent. The detailed illustrations of the toy characters
are so realistic that they do appear to have come to life. The material appears in a board
book format which children should enjoy carrying around with them.
Published by Hutchinson, £3.99.
