One Moose, Twenty Mice, by Clare Beaton

This chunky board book presents numbers from one to twenty via spotting puzzles and hand-sewn illustrations of everything from dolphins to ladybirds.

There's a catchy repetitive element that children will enjoy too – searching for a cat. Only by number twenty does the cat reveal itself, when there are twenty mice to chase!

Mother of a 15-month-old comments: "My daughter keeps picking this one up for me to read, so that's a good sign. She loves animals, and there are so many different kinds to spot in this book."

Foggy Friday, written by Phyllis Root and illustrated by Helen Craig

One foggy morning the rooster on Bonnie Bumble's farm loses his cock-a-doodle-doo.

All the other animals on the farm try making their own versions of the morning call ("The cow went moo-a-moodle-moo!"). But they don't work, so Bonnie Bumble sets about searching the farm for the rooster's voice.

She searches the whole farm, from the pigpen to the henhouse and, when the rooster's sound is finally found, Bonnie Bumble is so sleepy from all that looking, she does her own version, which is "Snore-a-snoodle-snoo!"

The illustrations are inviting and the book is a good size for holding up at bedtime.
