Baby books: *12 months to 18 months*

THIS MONTH'S FAVE RAVE:
First Word Book, illustrated by Jo Moore
Here’s a brightly-coloured book with wipe-clean pages that introduces words in child-friendly categories like ‘yummy foods’ ‘favourite animals’ and ‘in the garden’.

There are lots of familiar objects and animals that children will recognise at home. Each page has a group of cheerful pictures with large name labels, and these labels use a typeface that is recommended for early reading and writing, though it’s a shame that the illustrator’s name is buried on the back page.

HONOURABLE MENTION
I Love my Potty, by Lara Jones
Here’s the classic story of a child’s imagination deciding what her potty will be used for. The potty makes a brilliant car and a seat for storytime, and is the cause of conflict when the girl’s young brother wants it too. ‘Sometimes my potty is a drum – Bang! Bang!... And sometimes my potty is just my potty!’

Father of a 17-month-old comments: "We’re just getting into the idea of potties – there’s one hanging around the house from my elder daughter, so this is a good way of not being too serious about the whole business – if you know what I mean!"
