Christmas 2000

Baby books for Christmas: *12 months to 18 months*

While it's wet and chilly outside why not cuddle up for a good Christmas read with your baby. Here are four of our Christmas favourites.

CHRISTMAS CHOICE 1
A Little Bit of Winter, by Paul Stewart, illustrated by Chris Riddell
Hedgehog is ready to hibernate. The sentimental Rabbit can only say, with tears in his eyes, that he will miss his dear friend. Hedgehog has one request for his friend before he goes off for his winter sleep - he asks Rabbit to save a bit of winter for him, so he'll know what he has missed.

When, in the middle of the winter, Rabbit remembers his friend's request he rolls a huge snowball, wraps it in oak leaves, and stores it in his burrow. When spring comes along, there is a tiny bit of snow left to show to Hedgehog.

This is a great story with perfect illustrations.

Published by Andersen, £4.99

CHRISTMAS CHOICE 2
The Very Hungry Caterpillar, by Eric Carle
If you know someone who doesn't have a copy of this story about the caterpillar with a huge appetite, that features cut-out holes big enough for little fingers to poke through, this special anniversary edition with a separate paper jacket would make the perfect gift.

Published by Hamish Hamilton, £9.99

CHRISTMAS CHOICE 3
The Penguin Who Wanted to be Different, by Maria O'Neill, illustrated by Jill Newton
Dorothy Penguin is determined not to be like all the other penguins she sees around, but she doesn't know how and when she writes her letter to Santa she asks him for something that'll make her different.

When Christmas Eve comes along, Santa is in need of an extra helper (thanks to a flu epidemic among the pixies) and, remembering her special letter, he asks Dorothy to become his latest recruit.

Dorothy has a wonderful night helping Santa and in the morning her best Christmas present is a pixie hat from Santa.

Published by Little Hippo, £3.99

CHRISTMAS CHOICE 4
The Teddy Bears' Christmas Tree, by Sam Williams, illustrated by Jacqueline McQuade
There are dancing snowmen and sledging teddies in this large pop-up and pull-the-tab book with a rhyming story about the teddy bears' Christmas tree.

Published by David Bennett Books, £10.99
