February 2001Baby books: *Birth to 6 months*
It's never too soon to introduce books to babies. Some radical
thinkers in this area suggest starting at nine months old, but why
leave it so late? You could start at birth, making book-time equal
quality-time for you and baby.
THIS MONTH'S FAVE RAVE:
Hey Diddle Diddle, by Ailie Busby |
Heres
a big book with big blustery pictures of nursery rhyme characters
including Humpty Dumpty in a blue and white striped egg-cup suit, and
a rather unique horse for the lesser-known, but very popular in our
household, Horsey Horsey song (though Id prefer more of the
words to be printed). The grand foot-long hen who is clutching her own
sticks in One, Two, Buckle My Shoe is my favourite.
Mum of an four-month-old comments: "My
daughter has always loved rhymes she really takes notice when
we do the regular ones, but theres a good selection here."

HONOURABLE MENTION:
I Spy You, by Jan Ormerod |
This
is a lightweight board book youll be able to hold onto at the same
time as your baby. The text offers lots of opportunities to put spirit
into a game of hide-and-seek storytelling.
There are large lift-up flaps to help build on
the surprise element, and your child should engage with looking for
the range of playful, hiding babies behind the flaps.
