August 2001Baby books: Six months to 12 months
THIS MONTH'S FAVE RAVE:
Peekaboo Baby! written by Mandy Ross and illustrated by Kate Merritt |
This is a lovely hardboard flap book that introduces the idea of rhythm and counting in an interactive way.
On a each page there is a cue to lift up the big flap on the opposite page: 'Hello! Who is hiding behind her teddy? One, two, three - are you ready?...
Peekaboo!' Under the imaginative flaps (a girl's hair, a big red
balloon etc) you'll find the smiling face of a child. And underneath the last flap is a mirror because babies love to look at their own reflection.
Dad of a seven-month-old comments: "We love playing peekaboo using our hands, and this book with its happy faces under the flaps has gone down really well."

HONOURABLE MENTION:
Woolly's Walk
by Stephen Cartwright |
This touchy-feely hardboard book tells the story of a
hungry sheep called Woolly. Your baby will be able to feel
Woolly's soft wool body as well as other things she wants to eat along the way, such as flowers and an apple. Best of all are the thistles, which are ovals inset with brown prickly velvet - not too prickly to hurt baby's fingers, of course. In the end, Woolly plumps to eat some soft green felt grass.
