Baby books: 12 months to 18 months

FAVE RAVE
That's Not My Tractor written by Fiona Watt and illustrated by Rachel Wells
The laminated board pages of this book can be wiped clean of sticky finger marks, which is handy because your child will love feeling all the different textures included. The tractor theme is particularly suitable for children who like pictures of machines rather than cuddly toys, although there are still cute animals to look at in the book.

Each page gives us a close-up of a particular part of the tractor, like the funnel and the trailer, and encourages children to feel the textures. The tractor's tyres are made of squashy plastic and the trailer is as scratchy as sandpaper, but the little mouse finds his own tractor in the end - it's the one with the shiny headlights that catch the light beautifully.

Mum of a 16-month-old comments: "My daughter has always liked vehicles, and her favourite is a toy tractor. She likes looking for the mouse on each page."

HONOURABLE MENTION

Touch and Feel Bedtime by Jellycat and Dorling Kindersley with photographs by Steve Gorton
This is a great hardback book that uses real photographs of boys and girls, which will probably fascinate your child. Follow the different children as they get ready for bed, and feel the textures associated with each stage of the process - from putting on a fleecy dressing gown, pulling on slippers and brushing teeth with a toothbrush (this has a nicely ribbed handle for children to run their finger down). Last of all, there's a padded quilt to stroke, which is covering a sleeping girl.
