June 2001Baby books: Birth to six months
It's never too soon to introduce books to babies. Some radical
thinkers in this area suggest starting at nine months old, but why
leave it so late? You could begin at birth, turning book-time into quality-time for you and baby.
THIS MONTH'S FAVE RAVE:
I Spy You! by Jan Ormerod |
Here's a peek-a-boo boardbook that your baby will enjoy seeing you act out - and, as she learns to recognize the book, she will eventually anticipate and join in the actions herself. The
simple but large colourful drawings will gain her attention and, as her eye-hand control improves, she will soon be reaching out to turn the flaps herself and reveal who's hidden behind the
blanket.

HONOURABLE MENTION:
Let's Go!
by Tania Hurt-Newton |
This large-sized boardbook tells the simple tale of Eleph ant who zooms up in his car to take his friend Giraffe out for the day. Giraffe keeps guessing - wrongly - where they are going, and Elephant won't let on until they arrive at their surprise
destination. The story focus will help your baby associate the names of the animals with the pictures she is seeing.
