Baby books: Birth to six months

It's never too soon to introduce books to babies. Some radical thinkers in this area suggest starting at nine months old, but why leave it so late? You could begin at birth, turning book-time into quality-time for you and baby.

Farm! by Jo Lodge
A perfect first book, Farm is made in soft cloth with contrasting red, black and white colours that will help your newborn to focus. As babies drawn to faces, she will love the simple features of the cow, sheep and pig, while the three patterned pages have different levels of complexity to appeal to her as she develops. The mirror, set into the front cover, will allow your baby to admire her own face, although she won't yet realize who she's looking at! The book is light enough for her to pick up on her own once she has learned the grasping technique from about five months, and can be attached to a cot or pram within reaching distance.

Comments one dad of a newborn: "With our first baby, we tried all kinds of ways to attach a mirror to the side of the Moses basket... this cloth tab with its velcro fastening is a great idea!"

HONOURABLE MENTION:

Baby Play by Sandra Lousada
Here's an unusual book with black and white photographs of babies playing with toys, that has a round, plastic rattle attached. The photographs are great and the cord (which allows the pages to be opened easily) is short so that there's no risk to your baby.
